A few years ago I was speaking with Nigel Calder who was using Odyssey batteries in his new experimental Malo hybrid sailboat. He mentioned that the batteries had - out of the blue -stopped accepting a charge. The fix (I believe suggested by Odyssey engineers) was to give the bank a high voltage charge that sounded to me an awful like an equalization charge. Afterwards, everything was fine.
It was just boat show chatter so I didn't get any real details. Still, sounds similar to your situation.
