Peggy- This topic references your reply to an article on 10/29/2001 regarding diesel in the holding tank. Over the weekend my vessel received a dose of diesel in the wrong [holding] tank as well. Unfortunatly, crew eager to help and aft fittings which look identical (holding & diesel are both chrome and symetrically located on the vessel's aft quarters) resulted in several wasted (sic) gallons of diesel into my aluminum waste tank. I will use a low suds detergent to wash the tank out, as you instructed in the last post. This incident further incents me to convert the aluminum holding tank to poly as well. What struck me about the previous post was your quote "Petroleum products do degrade hoses and rubber and neoprene parts in pumps/macerators". Will a 'low suds' flushing be enough to save the macerator?

Get new caps.

Red caps are for diesel and black caps are for waste and blue is for water. Run, don't walk, to your nearest marine store and install them on your next outing.

Relax...degradation occurs over time...

not as a result of a single boo-boo. Flush the tank and related plumbing out VERY thoroughly with a lot of low suds detergent and water, and you should be fine.

Or...use nail polish to mark the caps...

...which is what I did after pumping 35 gallons of water into my starboard gas tank.
