Another Crazy Day in San Diego Harbor

I spend 2 weeks+ a month in San Diego for work. I bring my girlfriend out regularly on a companion pass. Once we rented a speedboat. I wanted a sailboat but she said " we sail all the time in Baltimore, why can't we get something faster". When we get out on the speed boat I could not believe how crazy San Diego bay is. It is as crowded as a mall parking lot at Christmas and it ALL FULL SPEED. The only no wake zones are inside Harbor and Shelter islands. I commented that I was surprised no one gets killed out here on a daily basis. Maybe I am just a wussy Easterner but good grief.

I watched 2 guys on jet skis crash into each other today. they were friends and from looking at the hand signals one was to go around a buoy counter clockwise, the other clockwise, apparently they wanted to jump each others wake. They got 1/2 way through their maneuver when one got pushed by an unexpected wake from a power boat and they crashed, fortunately only plastic and egos got damaged.

Maybe next time he will clip on the kill switch line. Those RIBs can be pretty bouncy. Well at least the boat didn't catch fire, then you would have had, wait for it,

Sunday’s crash was reported around 9:30 p.m., according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The accident occurred between Havasu Landing and Lake Havasu State Park when a 25-foot Carrera deck boat, carrying a driver and three passengers, was struck by a 28-foot Eliminator watercraft, carrying three passengers. The Eliminator was traveling northbound without its lights on and struck the Carrera’s broad side at about 40 miles per hour according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Cpl. Jeffrey Cross. All passengers ejected into the water, and a passenger from the Carrera helped everyone back into the boats. The driver of the Eliminator was pronounced dead at the scene when emergency responders arrived, Cross aid.

I missed that Walt. Now we know for sure why we sail there in the winter only. I'll bet the 40 mph was a slow estimate. The sheriff that made the report lives in my neighborhood and ran the burglars away from the house last year. I think San Diego bay was more crowded the week we were there a couple of months ago than Havasu, but the boats don't go as fast.

I'm glad to see collaboration with law inforcement, Also feel sorry for friends and family of the injured and killed, but bottom line, sometimes you just can't fix stupid!

Alcohol is believed to have been the cause, Cross said.

At least the fatality was the person who caused the accident..
