I put a collar type anode on my drive shaft and I think it caused my shaft to go out of balance because shorty there after I had to have a engine realignment because the shaft started to knock. So my question is can I attach a anode to my rudder or strut and do I need to drill a hole thru them or can I epoxy it on.

Ron...

1. Would suggest that you place the zinc close to the strut to eliminate a possible harmonic in the shaft between the strut and log. They are designed to be a tight fit on the shaft so an epoxy job should not be necessary. Back up one side with a hammer head and stike the other with a second hammer when you are putting the collar type on--it helps them to "set" on the shaft without overtightening the set screws.

2. Check your motor mounts--they are more likely the root cause of the shaft knock. The realignment may have cured it if one or mounts was loose. Check the rubber sections to be sure.

Re: Ron...

Interesting, I put a collar type on last fall and am having balance issues now. Never thought about the Zn.

Two quick points:
1. The zinc should not impede the flow of water into the strut cutlass bearing, so "close" is good but not so that the flow is obstructed.

2. With the collar type zincs, any imbalance in the zinc is magnified by the square of the distance from the shaft, so collar zincs are more susceptible to creating a vibration in the shaft than the "teardrop" shape.

Rick's right...

about the placement. "Close" didn't mean uptight against the strut. "Teardrops" are much better than collars for hydrodynamics.

NEVER EPOXY ON A ZINC!!! It requires a solid electrical connection to the metal otherwise it provides ZERO protection.
