Anothe dent in the mast

Hello all

Here is another question about my mast, while out on the bay yesterday I met another sailor and we decided to anchor and tied up the boats together, what I did not notice right away is that he had attached one of the docking lines to my outer shroud, that is I did not notice until a power boat went by and the boats started to roll which caused the docking line to pull hard on the shroud (that was when I noticed it and removed it). I then looked up and noticed that there was a little dent on the mast about a third of the way between the spreaders and the top of the mast, the dent appears to be about 2" wide although not very deep, almost as if it was hit with something....I am not sure if the dent was caused by the shroud being pulled hard a few times or if the dent was there before and was not noticed...is it possible to dent the mast at that point by pulling the shrouds and how concerned should I be? (I will post some pics soon)

Your boat rolled in the water way before any damage like that could happen. I would think the shroud or turnbuckle would fail/break before anything could happen to the mast.

i never tiie anything to shrouds when rafting--i will no tallow anyone to do that to me either--tooo much at stake in the damage department.....use the cleats and rafting boards----keep boats apart and donot raft in the areas of rough water .....gooood luck and fair winds......is just my humble opinion....(and bone headed arrogance LOL)

I would not do that either but by the time I noticed it the wake from the speedboat had already hit us and caused the boat to roll which yanked on the shroud twice before I noticed it and released the line, I am not sure if this caused the dent to apear on the mast or if somehow I had missed it before?

Your upper shroud at the turnbuckle should be one of the strongest points on your boat. The stress of a knockdown at this point would be far greater than the stress caused in the situation described. Any boat that cannot take a knockdown should not be on the water.

think about it this way, if the shrowd was pulled hard enough to bend the mast, then the opposite shrowd would have to give way first....they don't stretch like rope does. So yes, the dent was already there and what the guy was doing was not a big deal to the mast but will greatly help stablize the boat.

Points well taken...I looked at it today again and I think it's too small to for concern...
