What is the differnce between Anodized or not Anodized for a mast beside the money. and is it worth it to pay 100 more to have an Anodized mast?

To oversimplify, anodizing is a relatively smooth

controlled surface corrosion applied to aluminum to prevent uncontrolled pitting and extreme corrosion, and it generally is worth the extra cost if the part is in a salt water environment. Joe S

anodizing vs aluminum oxide

If you leave aluminum in an oxygen atmosphere it quickly developes an aluminum oxide coating and then stops rusting. Common causes of rust on aluminum spairs (anodized or not) are cleaning the aluminum which removes the oxide layer, putting screws into it that are not aluminum, wear around the SS shrouds. The screw problem can be fixed by either using aluminum screws (good luck find one) or using neverseeze on the threads. A dap of paint is helpfull too.

If a good paint is applied

and the paint actully remains on the mast, then anodizing is a mute point. It is only when the aluminum is exposed that it can form the aluminum oxide that Bill Roosa spoke about. I would spend the hundred bucks - that's a great deal to get an entire mast anodized. Then if the paint chips off, you wont have that ugly chalky oxide exposed. The other benefit is that the entire inside of the mast will be protected.
