I am trying to sell the idea of sailboat ownership to my wife and she wants to know how expensive this sailing "Hobby" will be in the long run, over 5-10 years. I am considering purchasing a used Catalina 22 and I was trying to get an idea about how much the average annual costs would be for such a boat under the following conditions: Boat: Used, in average to good condition (1980s boat) Storage: Stored on trailer and brought to launch site when used.(no dock space fees) Type of Sailing: Crusing and family fun (Not racing) Type of conditions: Wide rivers and open sounds (saltwater) Insurance: 22ft Catalina in the Savannah, Georgia area How often do I replace sails, rigging, rope, paint, etc. Thank you for the help.

I had a San Jaun 21

You don't need insurance for liability if you have homeowners. Unless you keep the boat in a marina the cost should be under $500 a year. BUT! Boats are expensive. This is not a sport for the poor! If you can't afford it, you should not boat!

My experience

Our C22 moorage for the season is $220. Storage over the winter is $110. Required maintenance items are probaly $200 a year. Insurance is $200. Stuff I like to buy for my boat is about $1,000 a year. Half the fun for me is researching new items and upgrades and installing them.

Another thought

Not mooring you boat in a slip will save money but at the expense of not using the boat much. I can't imagine having to set the mast every time we wanted to sail. Half our our sailing is weekday nights for a couple of hours. You wont do that without a slip. I know that some will disagree but in my opinion this is not a boat for dry storage. If you want to go that route get a day sailer which is cheaper and much easier to rig and launch.

Cheeper than grass

Here in Texas it cost me $45.00 a week to have the lawn mowed, and I also spend an extra 100.00 a month to water the stupid thing. So thats $280.00 a month for grass. You will have a lot more fun on the boat!
