Maybe best if we leave the variable cost of dockage aside, and focus on the added cost of the racing. The part that you spend on racing is the interesting bit. Everyone has to pay to dock.

If we ignore all of the general fixed costs of boat ownership--slippage, payments (for some), insurance, boat property tax (here in CA), general maintenance (bottom cleaning; bottom painting), & general repairs (finding/fixing deck leaks, etc.), then the annual cost of CLUB racing seems not especially high; e.g., $80 PHRF membership if required for Club races, $1,000 in Club dues, ca. $200-$250 in race fees for someone who does not enter many races, plus the cost/replacement of special racing hardware and sails. But, it does add a bit on top of the fixed costs.

Our 21 club races cost $25/yr. Outside of the club racing is about $500/yr for entry fees. This year the Mills Race, Falcon Cup, Islands Race, Green Island Race, Fall Bay, Snow Flurries are all on the schedule. Race fees include dockage at these venues which are anywhere from 15 to 60 miles away from our club. http://mi6657.wixsite.com/mills-trophy-race

Judy B. No bottom cleaning services needed here. Fresh water only has a slime issue which wipes off easily. We take the boat to a sandbar, go over the side and clean the bottom with a long handled scrub brush. In the fall we migh have the boat lifted and pressure washed for $75 for a big series.

Same for us... The VC17 pretty much keeps it at bay. A fine slime might attach but we take that off with a cloth while swimming. Biggest 'issue' is waterline scum, not a huge issue but looks 'slow'. So we attack that often.

Here's BlueJs spring list. We keep a live facebook doc in our crew FB page to track. I'd say half are normal things that any boat owner would do/replace/upgrade. The rest are because we like winning!

These club fees are terrifying for a tight wad such as myself.

That robotic scrubber reminds me of a story my dive instructor told. A hat diver was in the houston ship channel cleaning a very large ship with a hull scrubbing power tool when the tide ran out. The draft was enough to reach all the way to the mud and wide enough to prevent the diver from escaping.

The poor guy was smooshed into the mud until the tide came back. With the extra tide he was able to return back to topside.

True or not i dont know.
