What is the cost of a Catalina 22 per month, approximately?? Larger boats look to be too expensive for various reasons.

It's a hole in the water ----

David: I have an '88 Catalina 22 (14479) that I have had since it was new. It is long since paid off, I no longer keep it at a marina, and I am neglecting maintenance. My cost is about $300 - $400 per year including insurance, license fees, and a limited amount of maintenance. I also have a Catalina 310 (118) that I bought brand new in early 2001. The realistic cost is $500 per month that includes dock fees, insurance, maintenance, license fees and a kitty for upgrades and new toys. Add to that my payment of $521 and you get a little over $12,000 per year. I also have a 14 ft aluminum fishing boat that costs about $200 per year total. I get weak just thinking about it until May when the fun starts and then it is worth it and more.

I do not think you could get a more resonable boat to own and operate. Parts are available at a fair price, and most sail makers have a standard production C-22 sail. Plus, it is a great boat to sail. David C-22

It really IS a function of where it's parked! If you buy a trailerable model and can store it on property you own it will be MUCH less than if you have to rent a slip ANYWHERE in California. Question is, if it's on a trailer, will it effect how much you get out and use it? You can bet it will! There are a LOT of variables, so you will get a LOT of opinions on this question. You need to narrow down your options and be more specific.

My C22

Our lake is available for sailing April through the beginning of October. We pay $220 for a slip at our club for that period. We pay $66 to store it on land during the winter months. I believe our insurance is about $200 per year. That about covers the "must do" expenses. Beyond that I have a penchant for doing upgrades and repairs. Last year I spent $600 for a new main and this year $1,200 for a new roller furler and 150% Genoa. I have upgraded many other items and probably spend about $500 per year on various stuff. It makes me happy. I have a friend with a C22 and he doesn't upgrade or replace things on his boat. He also dosesn't insure it. He still has lots of fun. Get the boat, you'll love it.

Insurance

David: Take "r kolb's" advice and get the boat - you won't be sorry. But, don't do as his friend does and go without insurance - liability. If you can't afford the 200 bucks a year you can't afford what will be done to you if the unthinkable occurs. Other than that, go for it!

Insurance followup

If you have a homeowners insurance policy check it. Mine covered vessels under 26' and under 10hp

Insurance

My home owner's policy also provides insurance for the boat...liability, fire, theft, etc. However, all but liability is limited to $1,000 less any deductable on the HO policy.

its cheaper than a Disney vacation

I got a 1973 for 1,500 with trailer.Ive had it for 3 years now .All Ive done is replace a few things here and there, I dont go crazy buying electronics or gadgets.I go out with my family and have lots of fun out on the water. To me its all about getting out there.I did buy a new kicker for it. It only cost me what ever I need to repair that year. I guess iam lucky. I hate to spend more than what I pay for it. To make a long story short I make my neighbor and father in law jelous for what it cost me to sail. They have these huge sailboats and when the season is over it cost them an arm and a leg to take them out and storage.SO? catalina22 owners ROCK ON
