Annapolis Question

Quick question for the Annapolis veterans. My wife and I have considered going the last several years, and schedules never seem to allow. We're looking to get it on the schedule NOW for next year, so that there is no excuse. The question revolves around accommodations. To keep costs down, we were considering towing our 26 out and staying on the boat, but didn't know, since it's an in-water show, if getting a slip would be impossible. If that's not an option, how difficult is it to get a room close to Annapolis? Reservations a year in advance? Sounds like you all have had a lot of fun, and we'd like to join in and meet some of the faces behind the great advice we get from this site. Tom

In Annapolis it is impossible!!!! Suggest you look into Marinas in the Baltimore area.. They have a Shuttle Service.. Check with the Marina..

Good rates

We made our reservations late and ended up staying near BWI; it was a 25-30 min drive but we had plenty of choices and excellent rates.

Same here.

We just used a Yahoo map to pick an outlying town and then a Super 8(yep, we are cheap). If I had a trailerable(and a dinghy) I would anchor over in the river(under the 6th st. bridge) with the rest of the cruisers. It's a closer walk than from any parking lot! :)

You trailer sailors amaze me!

Tom: You and many of the rest of the trailer sailors really amaze me. That trip is about 700 miles each way. That is not my idea of a good time. Towing a boat for 700 miles is a very hard one day drive (even without towing). Then you need to factor in the additional fuel that will be used for a 1400 mile trip. I would think you would be much better off driving in from one of the outlaying areas and taking a shuttle to the show if you are looking at saving any money.

My 2 cents worth

There are transient slips at marinas in Annapolis, within walking distance of the show, which you could probably get a spot at if you looked now, but they are pricey. Or you can anchor out and hail the water taxi anytime, assuming you won't have a dinghy. To get a mooring in the harbor ($20/night), or an anchor spot that is within reasonable distance, you need to arrive days before the show. Slip reservations you'd have to make months ahead I'm sure. There are many B&Bs within walking distance. Suggest you start with a google.com search, if that appeals. Or go to www.annapolisaccommodations.com. My first hotel choice would be the Annapolis Waterfront Marriott ($$$) but it's within a few feet of the show and water with great views. Treat yourself.

On the hook?

Here's a link to a nice article by Sue Holt and Larry Hamilton, two of my favorite sailing writers on sailnet.com, about cruising the show. According to Sue & Larry, there's plenty of room there to swing on the hook. I learned to sail there myself, it is a big harbor.

Or call Super 8

1 800 800-8000 for rooms in Annapolis or Waldorf.

Steve D's just jealous....

... of our east coast sailing "capital". Those west coast guys, arggh! Bring your 26 and spend a week or two, or maybe a lifetime here. It's great and October is absolutely the best. Power boat show is going on right now and there are 3 empty slips right beside me and I'm about 2 blocks from the show, you can always find somewhere to tie up. Heck, there are many yachts here with 26'+ tenders hanging on their side/stern. Or, you can anchor up Spa Creek and dingy to any street end and walk to the show. Beautiful spot with sunsets that can beat anywhere. (The anchorage is no place for a 26'. It's pretty uncomfortably in a 40'.) Absolutely no place is more accomodating to sailboaters than Annapolis. And, I can say that objectively because one of the magazines just wrote it. Plan your trip here around the sailboat show. Last week there were absolutely a million transient sailboats here solely for the show. They meet annually. Come on down!!!
