We are considering heading toward Annapolis for the boat show in a few weeks. Been hoping to get down there for years. The admiral and I would love to make this a truly marine experience and would be thrill to be able to sleep on board a boat while at the show. Is there such a service in the area, where one could rent a boat solely to sleep on for a few nights? Any sailors keen on accomodating us? Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Boat Show

The Annapolis Boat Show is certainly worth experiencing. Although I am unaware of any resources, other than perhaps the link below, that offers visitors a boat to stay on, I would say that getting any place in the local area will be difficult at this late date. Annapolis is a small town and virtually all the hotels/motels in the town will be booked quite a while in advance of the boat show. If you can't find a boat to stay on -- and it's virtually impossible for one to sail one's own boat to the show and anchor out or take a mooring -- you may want to consider getting a motel room in one of the many outlying towns (although competition for space even out of town may be severe). Good luck with this in any event. If you come to the show, drop by the "Good Old Boat" and "Spinsheet" Booths as I'll be at one or the other and would be glad to say hello....

No problem reserving a room at

On Saturday, the 15th I had no problem reserving a room at the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis for a stay Friday to Monday. Travel seems to be off this year for some reason so lots of rooms were available. Is there going to be a get together of people from this bulletin board? It might be nice to put faces to the handles used here. All the best, Robert Gainer.

If you do, bring your foul weather gear

We have attended the show the last two years. Both years were cold and rainy. It would not be my first choice to sleep aboard in Annapolis at that time of year. But of course I am the first to admit that I`m a warm water sailor. We live in the Arizona desert and keep Corvette in Southern California. Good luck, maybe we`ll see you at the show! Kind advice

S/V, Thanks for the advice...temperature is a very relative thing, we regurlarly sleep on board at 50F and sail in the spring when it is less than 60F and water is barely above freezing. At 80 F, I for one desperately seek air-conditioned hideholes!!! Will bring foul weather gear for the rain but not the cold! ;-) Found some interesting spots...comments on expedia.ca about the Double Tree were very discouraging....I keep on hoping! Thanks to all. Ghislain.

Recommend BWI airport hotels...

That's where I stayed for all the years I was an exhibitor at the Annapolis show. Most are only about 30 minutes from Annapolis, and the rates are half or less the prices of rooms in Annapolis...IF you can still get one. Just be sure to drive into Annapolis by about 8 am if you want to find a parking place...you can have breakfast and enjoy a little window shopping or people watching till the show opens at 10. Btw, I will be at the show this year...I've been invited to speak at the SSCA GAM on Saturday and decided to stay over to see the show and catch up with a lot of longtime friends in the area.

Want to ride a boat in the whole way?

Offshore Passage Opportunities provides an off shore trip from Newport to the boat show and back-you would be on the boat the WHOLE time. I did the trip back in '03 and had a great time-but it is not for the timid! We did have some nasty weather on the return around Cape May. The other bad part is that you are only at the boat show for Thursday (but that's the "special" day) I could have stayed another day but had to leave on the "round trip" ticket. If I get a chance to do this again I may opt for the leg down, and jump ship in Annapolis for the extra time at the show. Check it out

Jim, I was there on Friday last year...

...and will be there on Friday again this year. Not many people on the floating docks last year. We did a lap around the outside and they were really bucking! It would be very cool to hook-up with others on this site to say Hi. Pick a time and a booth (Good Old Boats at 13:00?) and it could serve for every day of the show. Tom s/v Orion's Child
