I will...Fawcett's carries a lot books published by Seaworthy (my publisher), and has given us a big chunk of their space--in a great location, too...in the A tent, across the aisle from Raritan...booth A-43. It'll be listed in the directory under Fawcett's name. I'll be there for whole show and hope a whole bunch of you will stop by the booth to say hi. Email me (I'm in the all the directories for this site) for my cell # if you think you'd have any reason to need it. Phil...are you and Bly gonna make it to Annapolis this year?

Stayin' home this year

I guess it's just an earthquake vs. hurricane thing. Actually, we're still working to follow up on last year's show... a sure sign we need to stay at our desks this time around. It's possible we'll be at the Miami show this year, though...

Yeh, but will Fawcetts?

They were under several feet of water and were a mess. Its going to be a real task for them to get the store back together and be ready for the show.

Flooding not that unusual for Annapolis

This one was a bit higher than any other, but spring neap tides routinely flood the Dock Street area of Annapolis...so businesses--including Fawcetts--are used to it and know how to recover quickly. So trust me, Fawcetts will be there, and open...although they may have a few things on sale they hadn't planned to.

It's yours! :)

Stick around for breakdown Monday when the show closes and I'll save you a seat on the dock behind the Marriott. If you've never seen it, you're in a for a real treat.

Peggy, I sent you an e mail about the show but it came back undeliverable (mail deamons). Is your email address correct in the directory? sbc something? Long story short-I'll be for VIP day. If I get the email thing straight I'll give you d'tails

FYI....

Fawcetts re-opened Tues morning at 8AM. They're in business except for carpet and some stuff in the clothing area. Most everything else is open or close to it from what I hear, except for the Marriott. The docks at the Marriott and the Fleet Club are another story. Rumors aboud that the foundations are wrecked although I can't verify it from anyone. It will be interesting to see how they get it together for the shows, but my money says they will. After all, it is a "boat show", so long as there is water the show will go on. Peggy, look forward to meeting you at long last. Don

My spam blocker must have thought it was spam

Mailwasher is a wonderful program--it's cut the amount of spam I actually see down from over 100/day to < 10...but I've given it some "wildcard" expressions that make it a little over-protective sometimes...for instance, I've included *free* in a return address in the wildcard expressions to reject...it deleted and bounced an email from a friend whose last name is Freeman. If you'll try again, I'll turn off the automatic delete/bounce function in Mailwasher for a day.

Spam filters (OT)

Probably the biggest real issue with spam right now is all the legit mail that is being bounced by filters. We are finding more and more business-related emails are never being delivered because filters are set too tight. Some of these filters don't bounce the mail, either. I'm looking forward to some tougher legislation on all this stuff, as opposed to more individual filtering.

Unfortunately, gov't can't solve ALL our problems,

Some we just have to take responsibility into our own hands and solve 'em ourselves. It's impossible to legislate spammers who use offshore ISPs and then route the spam through 8 more offshore ISPs. Requiring our own ISPs to filter out anything that looks like spam is just as likely to filter out legitimate mail as any individual's spam blocker...with the added DISadvantage of the user being unable to over-ride it. Mailwasher works VERY well...it's a free program available from http://www.mailwasher.net (They just introduced a "for purchase" version called Mailwasher Pro, but the freeware is still available). It occasionally deletes/bounces mail it shouldn't, but that's a function of the wildcard expressions I've entered, not a flaw in the program...but it happens very rarely and is easy to fix--I only have to put the legimate email address on the "friends" list. I love it. As for gov't "fixes," I'm afraid that the national "no call" list is only gonna add to the volume of spam and printed junk mail...if they can't call you, they're gonna go after you any way they can. So it remains to be seen whether the "no call" list will turn out to be yet another gov't fix that causes worse problems than the one it was supposed to solve.

Annapolis storm pics and info

There are 2 Annapolis Web sites that are currently full of great pictures of the flood from Isabel, as well as source of info on the Boat Shows (as in, when will Fawcetts reopen). One site is the City government site, where there are links to a lot of spectacular pictures on the current home page and the other is the site of for the Annapolis Gazette newspaper. http://www.HometownAnnapolis.com/feature.html http://www.annapolis.gov/

Will Be There on Thursday

I'll be there on Thursday, along with the Admiral. Peggy - will look for you and a copy of your book (signed?). BTW - Was just at Fawcetts this morning. They're up and running - although the clothing section is not as it once was, they're working like mad to get it back in order. Looks like they had about 3 feet of water in the store.

Press release from the Annapolis Boat Show

Annapolis Maryland – September 22, 2003 – “Despite the destruction in the Annapolis area caused by Hurricane Isabel, the Annapolis Boat Shows will open on schedule,” Kathy Wood, President of Annapolis Boat Shows, Inc. announced today. “The United States Sailboat Show will open on October 9th and the Powerboat Show the following week on October 16th, as scheduled,” Mrs. Wood stated. “The shows are too important to the City of Annapolis and to the boating industry to even consider any other option. Although the damage to the Annapolis waterfront was considerable, we have been assured that all repairs necessary to support the shows will be completed with plenty of time to spare,” Mrs. Wood explained. “We sustained no damage to show equipment from the storm. We had several days notice of the impending severe weather and our staff put in several long days and nights removing floating docks from the water, securing tents and pilings and taking all other necessary action to secure everything out of harm’s way,” Wood said. “Saturday morning our team began all the various tasks necessary to put our preparations back on schedule for a smooth setup and opening.” “When the gates swing open on October 9th, we are inviting the world to join us in Annapolis for a celebration of boats and boating, as we have for more than thirty ears,” Mrs. Wood concluded. For more information about the shows, contact the show office at 410-268-8828. I talked to 'em this morning...things are almost normal around Annapolis Harbor again, except for an unusually high level of construction going on...even the Marriott has already re-opened, which she said was amazing! So if you've been hesitating about coming, hesitate no longer. See y'all there!
