annapolis bareboat-itineray Help

I have a wedding to attend in NYC the 3rd week of June. I was thinking of driving down to Annapolis to p/u a bareboat and see the Chesapeake for 4-5 days. Can you help with itinerary? Where to go, and NOT go?

Wow that's a target rich environment for cruising. There are many Chesapeake Bay cruising guides and you will probably get as many opinions on this forum as there are places to go. Go southeast out of Annapolis to St Michaels , Cambridge etc go north to rock hall, Baltimore, Chester river . You ll be sure to have a great time

Depends on what you like to do, e.g. open water sailing or motoring up rivers. It would probably be worth you getting "Cruising the chesapeake:a gunkholers guide (4 edition). See amazon's site for info on it. It has detailed info on everything that you need to know to make decisions.

There's also the: "Go the way the wind blows" approach.

When people ask about our neck of the woods, I ask 'em if they like to marina hop or anchor out, first.

St. Michaels is an awesome place. Another good one is Solomon's Island.

You could always go through the Tilman Island draw bridge, go into the Choptank, Head up San Domingo creek and back door St. Michaels. Leave there and to go Oxford on day two. Day three head down the bay to Solomon's Island, and Head back up on Day 4 towards Annapolis.

Other Must-see places are Tangier Island and/or Smith Island. Both are very unique communities.

St Michaels, Wye River, Rock Hall, Chester River, Rhode River, Magothy River.

All have beautiful anchor spots I would e mail to you . Wye River has Shaw Bay. Dividing Creek. Chester has Grey's Inn Creek, Langford Creek, Corsica River,
Rhode/West River has High Bar and others, Magothy has Eagles Nest, Broad Creek and others. Severn has College Creek, Round Bay,

So many places to choose from

All of the destination suggestions offered here are right on target. But, as usual, Stu has it right: go where the wind blows. We are just so lucky to have so many gunkholes here on the Chesapeake that oftentimes when I set out for a cruise with a destination in mind, I will change it to someplace else when I raise the main, unfurl the genoa, and realize I'd rather be beam reaching rather than beating to someplace directly upwind.

Good advice, thats why I gave him a large semicricle to pick from. Let the wind guide you. Funny when we go to the LI Sound its the tides and current not the ind which determines the direction of casual sail. We are spoiled here on the Chessie.

Solomons to Annapolsi is a long day and the Tillman bridge can be a really shoaled entrance from the west side depending on draft. If do Santo Domingo Creek...thats a nice one....maybe stop in Dunn Cove for lunch.

Lots of good advice here. It would take you 30 years to do it all. Eastern Shore takes you back in time to when things were slower. Fewer mobos. Exception: Kent Island (other side of the Rt. 50 bridge) is a go-fast boat hangout.

I have an Uncle who has cruised the bay for the last 30 years for months at a time every summer. He takes 2-3 month long trips out there.

He is still discovering new anchorages and places to go that he adds to his list of favorites. It is kind of nice because he is like a personal cruising guide. I also do a lot of sailing where I meet up with them so I have followed them back into some of the trickier places.

One thing for the bay, a draft of 5' and under seems ideal for a boat.
