Howdy sailors, Does anyone know the approximate Angle of Vanishing Stability (AVS) for an O'Day 23? For those not in the know, the AVS is the angle limit at which a boat will capsize and recover on its own. Patrick

Weeeellll, I pushed mine pretty far this summer. I had the port rail in the water, and it came up to the sheet block mounted on the deck. But I didn't get a chance to glance at the encline gauge because it took me by suprise. One thing I did learn, for that, was there isn't much pressure on the tiller when she want to round up. I got the impression that if I would have forced it there, she would have went right on over and drowned my ass ! I'm not sure if this helps answer your exact question though. Thanks for relaying the personal experience. It sort of answers my question. Mainly I am new to sailing and I don't want to push the angle too far yet so I want to stay within a comfort zone.

Professionally designed
Most of the O'days from the mid-seventies through the eighties were designed by C. Raymond Hunt and associates. The only exception from those times that I can think of was the O'day 27 (but not the 272) which was designed by Alan Gurney, also a professional naval architect. I think it is safe to assume that these professionals haven't made any big mistakes and that the boats, unless heavily modified, will recover from a gust induced knockdown. Waves are another matter - a study from the University of Southampton in the UK concluded that even a well designed boat could be capsized by a breaking wave (not swell) with a height greater than 60% of the boat's waterline length. Of course, that would be something like a 12 foot wave on your 23, but at least you know what to avoid
Check out the photos in the attached link to see what a big wave can do to a Santana 22! On my 192 we have sailed her heeled over so far that the lifeline stanchions were dragging in the water and she has alway go us home safely.

Rounded up
It has been my experiance that you will always get rounded up and pointed into the wind long before you will be blown over. Got caught up in a 40 knot plus wind with full sails up, we got rounded up twice before we got the sails down. It was a hell of a ride wife screaming "We are going to die" but we were not in my opinion any were near about to get knocked down. Waves that is an entirely different situation. Enjoy it is a fun boat.

to much wind
Tried to out run a storm with sails up , a gust nearly had the spreader in the water before the sheets parted company with the sail. She popped right back up with the sails flogging like crazy. Don't try out running a storm with the sails way to exciting.
