Great photo Phil. We sawe the newspaper coverage of that storm last week and the phots of the boats in Victoria covered with snow and ice. It kind'a brings a little winter reality to you guys out there in lotus land. Keep an eye on those San Juans for me ... we'll be back this summer. Best regards. Richard

This Winter I'm replacing some scuppers and thru-hulls and came across a chilling (excuse the pun)possibility mentioned in the BoatUS magazine: adding enough weight to the boat can drag the cockpit scupper through-hulls below the waterline, preventing the cockpit from draining and allowing it to fill with rainwater and in some cases sinking her. All that ice must weigh a good bit...

for the harbor de-icing boat. Don't they have one of those, like the pumpout barge? You have to be very careful on the boat in the winter. Ice falling fifty feet from the top of the mast or forty feet from the spreaders can make a big dent in your head. I just had some miss me a couple of weeks ago. As for neglect, I don't think so. For someone living aboard that might be the best insulation they will ever have.

Looking close at the left side of the picture, there's a dockline and portion of a boat visible tied up that has just as much ice caked on. In light of that and the docks are just as iced...must have been a freak storm. Bryan

You took the words out of my mouth, just when was the owner going to winterize his boat. After it sunk and the ins. co. bailed him out and made our rates go up for his dumbness. Take the sails off,remove the doger and pay a little attination to your investment. Yes, lets get on with another photo contest. The rock is getting old. There I've said my two cents. How many days to spring?

I think more information would be needed before a valid assessment could be made. The first winter I owned my boat here in North Texas, we had a freak snow/ice storm blow through. The weight of the ice and snow damaged several local marinas. The covered slips for the powerboaters accumulated enough snow and ice to collapse them on their boats. As soon as the streets were passable (the next DAY), I went out and checked my boat. While it wasn't quite as bad as that picture, it was close. I knocked all the ice off, and brushed everything off. I did NOT remove the sail, or sail cover, or do any other "winterizing". Some of you northerners may think that's foolish, but our "winter" was over. They don't last long here, and they're VERY unpredectible in length and severity.

How about this time line to drive the folkes up north crazy. Sunday morning 11 degrees and my boat looked like the one pictured due to spray freezing. Three days latter sailing with temps 65-70. I guess there are a few good things about living in the south. Fair winds and warmer temps to all!
