Talk about luck!!! how does anyone like that get the right a own a boat? Folks could have been killed and loads of destruction. If that's not a case for licensing boat skippers I don't know what is. I don't want to start a whole thing about licensing but surely there must be a way to keep a$$holes like this off the water.

We have licensing in Canada. Unfortunately it is very difficult to "license out stupidity"

He lucked out this time but be assured, some day it'll catch up to him, Darwinism, y'know? All we can hope for is he doesn't take out others at the same time.

My marina is in outer Los Angeles harbor and I can tell you, every weekend you can repeatedly hear the 5 short horn blasts from ships in the main channel, Sundays are the worst.

That is just amazing that he wasn't clobbered. Even on the lake I sail on some folks don't get it. Few weeks ago while on a starboard tack I had a guy with his 30+ something coming right at me. I had to turn to avoid him running directly in to us. He gave me a friendly "howdy wave". I thought about giving him a different sort of "wave"......

Sooner or later

This guy will get his. And you cannot license or regulate stupidity.

Kinda like folks who get hit at railroad crossings.. They go through them so much that they don't hear or see the train !! Last week a mini van here was hit.. three killed .. The track crossing has open view for about a mile on each side.. No warning lights , but clear day, no fog, no rain.. Speed limit for cars there is 35.. Train was moving about 40, under his speed limit.People in teh area heard the horn sound . Hard to understand.

I'd rather be depolyed to Afghanistan

The statistics clearly indicate that driving to work on the interstate is about 7 times more risky than being a soldier in Afghanistan. Looks like we are getting to unity on the water too.

Not as close as it looks

I am sure that the skipper of the large vessel entering the harbor could see the mast of the sailboat above the breakwater and in motion towards the channel so he probably reduced speed anticipating just this situation (likely has seen it happen many times). The vessel does not seem to be moving very fast or agitating the water drastically with reverse thrust so my guess is he anticipated it, took proper precautions in advance and let the sailboat live for another day.
As for five horn blasts, I'd be surprised if you did a survey of the average boater if they knew what it meant, or a single long blast for that matter.

We have people playing that game with 1800 ton gravel barges. The tug captain just blows a sustained blast on the whistle. He can't stop. So far nobody has been hit.

Being smart or having some common sense are not prerequisites for being a boat owner.

Mat Not be What It Seems??

This might not be what it seems - as any of those leveling criticism could have found out, as I did, by typing 'Watchet' into Google Maps and looking at the Aerial View. http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=51.184219,-3.327956&spn=0.003073,0.010793&t=h&z=17
Or 'Watchet Harbour' into Google and reading the Pilotage information available.

Just to the right of the shot and close to the outer wall is a lock gate into the marina.
This lock is controlled by traffic lights.
It appears to me that the yacht was exiting on the green light and, being close to the sea wall, might not have been able to see the oncoming tripper boat's mast and superstructure.
On the other hand the tripper boat would have known about the lock into the marina and seen the traffic lights which should have been red. It would also have been able to see the yacht's mast and detected that it was coming out.
THAT IS WHY HE WAS STATIONARY - look carefully at the video.
I believe he was waiting for his turn to enter the harbour.

Traffic lights facing into the harbour (sea)
“Sea side” traffic lights consist of three red lights and three green ones. When the green lamps are illuminated vessels may proceed through the gate with caution. When the red lamps are illuminated it means that vessels shall not proceed.

“Marina side” traffic lights are intended to control the traffic leaving the marina into the outer harbour. They have similar form and function to those traffic lights facing “sea side”.
