I am new to the sailing world on a catalina 25' 1986. I do not want to spend too much money renting a slip at a marina so I thought of mooring or anchoring somewhere close to where I live. Does anyone have any advise.

All I can add is that anchoring properly, which borders on being an art form, requires both experience and the proper ground tackle. It is not easy to type everything you need to know and I'm not sure there is any book which can give you a thorough understanding and even if there is, you also need some experience in various types of weather and bottom conditions.

In other words, if you value your boat and don't have a load of liability insurance, get a mooring which is inspected annually and is properly set.

Personally, for a long term stay I'd prefer a mooring. I've always considered anchoring a temporary solution.

The problem is that you can't just drop your anchor or mooring anywhere, especially in Florida. I'm sure the state, county and city all regulate where you can, and can't put in a "permanent" mooring, and from what I've read they're just as particular about anchoring.

If I was going to anchor for the longer term I suppose I'd go oversized and maybe run 2 anchors. But maybe I'm just paranoid. :)

Moorings, of course, are a lot cheaper than a slip, but then you need a place to keep the dinghy when you are away from the boat. Some places charge just for a dinghy tie-up. Have you thought about checking the classifieds for Cape Coral? A lot of people on canal-front homes don't use their docks, and gladly rent the docks out to boat owners at a reasonable price. You'd be a lot closer to the Gulf, to, than if you were to come down the river from Ft. Myers. There are places to anchor behind Ft. Myers Beach, if you wanted to check into that.
