We anchored out 18 nights on our recent cruise on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in winds ranging from zilch to 25 knots. We anchored in some beautiful spots like Rae Basin in the pic and were either by ourselves or with only one other boat eleven nights. One challenge I've always had with anchoring is figuring out how far I am from other boats or from shore to determine if I have adequate swing room. From Wanderlust's deck, things almost always look closer than they really are. Frequently I'll row around in the dinghy after anchoring and then laugh at myself for being concerned about how near some obstruction apppeared that was really well clear. On this trip I tried using the VRM feature on my radar to verify distance after anchoring. Turn the radar on and reduce the range to .125 miles or your minimum range. Pull up the VRM feature and dial down the dotted circle to your nearest obstruction, boat, shore, whatever. The display on the radar tells to down to .001 nautical miles (about 6 feet) how far away something is. Knowing how much rode you let out and your depth, it's easy to determine if you have a swing room problem. Probably makes more sense to do before you drop the hook, but there always seems to be too much going on then. In any event it worked and was kind of fun. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust h37.5

Gary that technique may put radar to use more

than looking for ships that are not there. Good Idea.

Gary, I have posted many times trying to find out what type of hard dinghy you have. I saw you picture in one of the rags and wonder what your dink is. I think it may be a Minto.. Sean

Gary you are having too much fun and must

come home now. It is well after your bed time and folks are concerned that all the fresh air and invigorating sights are going to cause you to have a hard time adjusting to Monday morning. I know that just the two pictures that you posted are causing me much distress and it is only the middle of the week! It is for your own good and you should listen to me. Other wise you might post another picture of the serene, calm, beautiful, NW coast with beautiful calm waters, a pretty sail boat and I'll have to go to work and ........ OK dang it!!!!! I admit it I wish I where YOU!!! Throw me a life picture, I'm drowning in the day to day!!!!

Gary, I had to laugh

Your idea is great. I dont get out as much as you, and seem to only anchor out 10-12 nites a year on a good year. But I ALWAYS worry about being too close, and I have reset the anchor too many times because I think Im too close (my wife loves that part). Then I stand on the deck and watch as we swing to make sure we're OK. Eventually I get into the dink and row around, and it never fails to amaze me how far away we really are from the other boats.
