Anchoring in the Florida Keys

From what I read and heard from other sailors Florida is not as boater friendly as I had hoped. Is this true? Are there any places in the Keys where it's possible to anchor without spend mucho dollars a night. I've read some boater travel guides and it appears that the marinas are for the very rich?? I'd love to go cruising there, but I want to do it on a beans and rice budget, not champagne and caviar.

Key West

Keys anchorages

I moved from Houston to Miami 2 years ago. There are numerous anchorages between Miami and Key West. Eliot key, Pumpkin, Tavernier, Rodriguez, Bahia Honda and NEAR Little palm Is. (LP$ i$ for the truly rich and famou$) but I anchored a 1/4 mile away for free.Those are some of the free anchorages. I hear good things of Boot Key in Marathon, mooring balls for $15/nightNear Miami, there is "Nixon's anchorage" off Key Biscayne (Nixon's old house) and the Coconut Grove Sailing Club has guest moorings for $15/night.Most of this info is in the cruising guides.Welcome to Florida.Capt.
