We are sailing from Wickford, RI to Salem,MA and are looking for anchoring sites along the way. We are planning on anchoring in Buzzards Bay at Horse Neck Beach. Is that a good place to anchor? Our plan is to anchor in Buzzard's Bay, then PTown, then somewhere in Boston, any ideas for that, then on to Salem. Anyone who has done this trip, let us know of any suggestions of good places to anchor. We are on a 38 Catalina.

Onset Bay is a good spot on the west end

of the canal. The entrance is a bit intimidating- there is a large rock and a buoy to the north side of Hog Island Channel which is the entrance. Allow for the set of the current (it runs quite fast) and use plenty of power to get out of the current and into the entrance channel. Study the chart to be sure you understand exactly where to go. Motor down to the island and you can anchor just outside of the moorings at Onset Bay Marina and the yacht club. The yacht club has good diesel prices and an easy in/out dock. The Onset Bay Marina will give you a key to the shower for $2-3. Marc Anthony's is a great family pizza place at the main intersection in town. Take your dinghy further in and you will see the large town dock. Dinghy parking behind the far side. A short 5 min walk to Marc Anthony's and a 2 more minutes to the food store. Also a nice beach by the town dock. At the entrace to Buzzard's Bay is Cuttyhunk. A good stop from Newport area. Anchor outside the breakwater off the edge of the channel. You will see others there also. If you like raw clams and oysters, call the Raw Bar on Ch 72 after 4pm and order 1/2 or full dozens for dinner. If you have never visited Cuttyhunk, it is worth a stop and walk around. Not much there, but that is the lure.

Local advice

I would definately make for Hadley harbor (inside , Wood hole)on your first night. This place is the jewl of Cape Cod and just about the spot for day's sail. If yoy want to stay in "Boston" the city, you don't have many choices. Constitution Marina is about the best and it is expensive. if you just want to hang in th are taht night, I would anchor on the lee side of specticle island.

In Boston, I've anchored at the SBYC

The South Boston Yacht Club is a very friendly group. It is located just west of the old fort in Dorchester Bay. You can anchor just outside of their mooring field in 8-10 of water, and if you ask they will let you land your dinghy at their dock and cross their property to access the street. They do lock their gates at night, so be sure to ask the time so you won't be locked out. I've been there twice and have always found a warm welcome.

Bostons Harbor Islands have moorings

I have not yet used them but there are moorings around many of the Boston Harbor islands. Go to: http://www.bostonharbor.com/moorindex.html to get information on where they are located and how to reserve a mooring.
