This weekend, we anchored overnight a couple of miles from our marina. This was my first night on the boat and I wasn’t particularly pleased with my decision on the anchorage spot. I have a couple of questions when considering a good anchorage spot. a. Close to Shore or Away from Shore – we anchored approximately 100 – 200 yards from shore in 25’ of water in a designated anchorage area. Anytime a boat passed, the waves shook us. Tidal current also moved the boat quite a bit. Is it better to anchor further away from shore? b. Designated Anchorage areas – there are some designated anchorage areas on the charts – these areas seem to be too close to traffic areas. Should I assume that these are safe spot? c. Tips on Keeping the boat steady – any cost effective tips to keep the bobing to a minimum. Generally, what characteristics should I look for to find a good spot – e.g. land protection, depth, traffic, etc.

Where were you?

and where do you sail ...bay, river, resevoir, etc? I think that is a very important element for getting any advice here. 25' of water that close to shore is unusual for my part of the world. That's pretty deep. Unless you are at the head of a creek or river, or in a very remote area, chances are you will have wake from passing boats in mid-summer.
