I'm plannin a 7 to 9 day sail about the middle Chesapeake and thought Poplar Island might be a good anchorage (on he Esatern side) fro my shoal draft Hunter 23.5. Anyone been out there recently? Depth? Am I stupid ro maybe I should stay at Knapps Narrows. I asked earlier this year but didn't get much of a response. They (the DNR) are reclaiming the once larger island with dredgings from Baltimore Hatbor and other unknown spots. I just wonder if there is any anchorage at all. Any help is appreciated. Hayden

Poplar Island Harbor

I'm just across the bay from Poplar Island and sail there frequently. I do not recommend trying to get into the harbor from the east side (or any side) as it is virtually unmarked; its depths are unknown but probably shallow; a lot of construction activity and barges are moving in the area; and the harbor itself is exposed from just about every point on the compass. Depending on where you are coming from, or heading to, there are lots of other beautiful and safe anchorages nearby. Let me know if you would like some suggestions.

Other Suggestions

Go thru Knapps Narrows and head north to one of the many beautiful creeks nearby.

Dun Cove

There isn't any protection when anchoring at Poplar Island. Continue on thru Knapps Narrows , turn north into Harris Creek and go on up to Dun Cove for a well protected and picturesque anchorage in Dun Cove.

Forget it

I tried many years ago to approach the island from the East side and touched bottom at 5 feet long before the chart said I should have. Now, there is so much construction and moving of dirt, the noise can be heard at mid Bay. You don't want to get there even if you could. But there are many great places on the other side of Tilghman.
