20# Hi Tensile Danforth, 25# CQR

Depends on bottom type. I carry both on my double bow rollers - the Danforth flukes are hung vertically, with the stock on the bow roller. The pin in the bow roller assembly fits the molded hole on top of the CQR perfectly. Snap shackles from the inside bow hook in the anchor locker to the chain help keep them secure. I also tie the chain(s) with nylon rode at the cleat. I have about 20 ft of 5/16 chain on both. Normal nylon rode length (1/2") is 150 ft, but I keep 300 ft additional stored in a lazarette. I used the 13# Danforth type that came with the boat for a couple years, but feel a lot safer with the 20# hi tensile Danforth.

Bob hit the nail on the head.

RB: I think that Bob hit the nail on the head. 2 different types of properly sized anchors is the way to go. Danforth/Fortress type anchors are almost worthless in a weed/grass bottom. The work great in mud and sand. The spade type like the CQR and the Delta are very good for penetrating the weeds. Then there are the plow type that have good holding ability but you must pay a weight penality for these anchors. You also need to consider storage. Be sure that you have a place to store both of these anchors with tackle. Use about a foot of chain for each ft. of boat length and two types of anchors and you should be able to handle most conditions.

I carry a 33# Bruce, a 12-H HI tensile Danforth, and the Danforth cheapo that Hunter supplied with the boat. I also carry a small mushroom that I can rig as either a lunch hook for the dinghy or as a kelet (?) to run down the anchor rode to improve the effect of my scope. I do not sail where rocks and deep weeds are a problem. if I did i would find something better for that kind of bottom - like a plow (maybe a Delta?) or maybe even a yachtsman. I also carry a 200' 1/2" three-strand nylon line with 40 feet of 3/8 BB chain as my main rode. In 10 feet of water & in fair conditions, letting the chain out so it just lays on the bottom works perfectly and provides a fairly limited swinging radius. If the weather picks up , I let out more scope. I carry two 150' 1/2 inch nylon rodes with eight feet of chain attached to use for second anchors or extending the main rode if ever needed. These I keep in anchor bags rigged and ready to use at all times. I also have a 250' warp of 3/8 nylon that I carry for general use. This works well for carrying a line to shore if appropriate. I do not have a windlass - can't figure out where to put one. Good Sailing - Bill Murray S/V Good Faith H29.5 #175
