Anchor Windlass Yamaha33 revised
We want to install an anchor windless on our Yamaha 33 and I am wondering if anyone has a Yamaha 33 with one installed. Just wondering if a vertical windless will work?
I believe I can mount a vertical windlass in the anchor lock using 3/16 6061 angle aluminum rails on either side a 5/16 6061 aluminum plate fastened to the rails. I would then put a wooden bock (1 inch plus ) on the aluminum plate and mount the windlass on this. Next, I would cut a hole in the anchor locker lid sufficient to clear the windlass allowing me to be able to open and close the anchor locker lid with the windlass fixed in place. I would have to carefully calculate the width of the wooden block so there is a minim of open space.
I guess my question is, how much reinforcement with I need for the anchor locker in a Yamaha 33. I have already installed the rails as I have a removable lofrans manual windlass that I have used. I noticed that the thickness of the glass appears to be in excess of ¼ inch and I currently have rails installed on either side of the anchor locker with each rail fastened with three ¼ inch SS bolts/nuts/fender washers and bedded. I suppose I could switch to an all chain ¼ inch rode and get a new gypsy for the Lofrans manual windlass and use the setup I currently have but I don't want to spend $500 for the new gypsy when I paid $100 for the used windlass. The manual system needs two people to haul the rope anchor rode (one person tails) and its definitely work. Can't use the manual windlass for chain as the capstan and gypsy are on opposite sides and the forestay gets in the way so I have to haul the 33 lb Bruce and 50 lb of chain by hand and I'm not 20 anymore. Currently we have 33 feet 5/16 HT chain and 250 feet ⅝ nylon double braid. The manual windlass is held to the rails with 4 bolts and wing nuts, then is stored in the aft section of the anchor locker. Even room for some 1 lb propane tanks!
Thanks,
Rick B
