I have a 30 TRBS Catalina and want to install an acnhor windlass in the locker on the ledge, has anyone done this, or have one installed already. I would welcome any comments on windlass used and any problems on the instalation...thanks

mind your hands...

Mine was factory installed (I think) at the time and works fine (also on a TRBS). The only gripe I have is that it doesn't feed the chain automatically, so that your hand/fingers are in real and constant danger when hauling up the anchor. Also, being installed in the locker, there isn't really much room for the chain and warp, which exacerbates this problem. If I were to replace it (and some day I will) I would go for one which is installed on deck and feeds the chain through a hawser pipe into the locker (and feeds automatically, but I assume all modern ones do that). Would also be interested to hear what others have done in this area.

Edward thanks for your reply, what is the make and model of your windlass, and was an extra roller added to ensure the chain runs smoothly over the bowsprit?

Nice installation

That is a really neat installation you did. Would you have plans or dimensions for the wood forms you made? What anchor roller did you use and do you leave the anchor hanging off the front of the boat or keep it in the locker? Does the Lemar handle both chain and rode? What type of anchor do you find works for you? Sorry about all the questions.. Thanks for the time. I have hull # 593...1977 30

extra roller

Martin I have a double roller over the bowsprit: one for the anchor and one for the mooring line. Will have to check Saturday what make it is! I think the installation shown in reply 2 comes as close to the perfect solution as you can get in a Cat30. Good windlasses these days all can take both rode and chain. It is certainly worth installing: whatever you spend on such a system now you will easily save on a chiropractor 10 years down the track!

original windlass

Martin, getting back to your earlier query: the windlass is a Maxwell, but I couldn't detect a model number. It would be antique by now (1988). Almost certainly factory installed, because the anchor locker has an integrated moulding which holds the windlass motor. As commented previously: I wouldn't do it that way if I had the choice.
