i am about to (maybe) REPLACE my simpson lawrence SEATIGER windlass that has been neglected by the previous owner. it is not working and i haven't had the time to try to rebuild it. My wife has offered to buy me a new LOFRANS ROYAL manual to replace the one on the deck now..... my old back ain't what it used to be so any help is good. now what are YOUR feelings gang.... any idea how hard it is to rebuild a seized unit or should i send it to simpson lawrence and have them do it or just go for the ROYAL as the price on sailnet is good and the boat show is only 10 days away.....help me out here guys...... thanks in advance chet p S.V. Pull the cover off

It's very simple to pull the cover off the bottom and get an idea of what is going on. I'd do that first, but there really isn't that much in them and if it's seized, it's probably serious, like gears corroded and all. However, a quick look inside will give you a better idea of where to go with this.

Already wired?

Not you Chet, the anchor locker. If the wiring is good I would watch E-Bay for another motorized. You can see my manual installation in the Photo Forum. But I have to tell you it takes a lot of handle moves to bring up fifty foot of chain. I agree with Gene. Open it up and see what is wrong. Could be a simple fix.

what do you me my "schedule for Fla" ???? I expect warm and sunny weather with occasional showers progressing to HOT and sunny with more showers as summer gets here,returning to warm and sunny as next winter arrives .....

I rebuilt mine

I rebuilt my Simpson Lawrence Seatiger 555 last June. The unit has a habit of leaking at the seals and water gets into the inner workings. The good news is, it's mostly bronze shafts with steel gears that will clean up with a wire brush if it hasn't sat too long. I priced a rebuild from the factory, around $800 not including parts. Take the bottom cover off and see whats happening in there. I got to where I can take this thing apart and put it back together in an hour. The initial clean-up is the hardest but after you get it apart and clean it's a piece of cake. Check the link for the parts list. The windlass is well worth repairing as a replacement is around $1,500. One very important fact from the factory. Use only Lithium grease when you rebuild it and fill it 80-90% full. Regular grease is too viscous for proper operation of the pawls. Good Luck Tom Hadoulias S/V Lite Chop
