Would like to add an anchor windlass to my Hunter 30. The anchor locker hatch is to close to the bow. Where have previous owners added the windlass, in the locker-just forward of the locker or where else? Looking forward to your help. Dennis 1980 Hunter 30 "NIKE". Cherubini problem.

Dennis, I think all the early Hunters have that problem, the locker openings are right up to the bow. The ones that I have seen that I like were modified to add a bowsprit, a lot of work and expense(see Link). I have also seen them mounted behind the locker opening but not sure how they directed the rode into the locker. I plan to add a manual windlass, maybe someone will chime in with some ideas. I read a good case for staying away from a vertical, below-decks unit. See the log of Ithaka on the CW site.

Me too!

I have a 1980 Hunter 30 and thought about the anchor windlass problem. I did add a Simpson-Lawrence KBR-20 anchor roller for a 15 lb. Danforth. The roller is placed just to port of the bow stem fitting and the anchor shaft and rode runs just under my furler line. I had to move the bow cleat slightly and remove the original reef hook for the jib on that side. The roller works fine and makes anchor retreival much easier. Since you are thinking about a manual windlass, you could easily mount a low profile unit on the deck, just aft of the locker, aligned with the roller. With a manual unit, you could reteive the anchor with the locker open, feeding the rode into the locker and then secure the anchor chain (as I do) to a clip on the floor of the locker. Good Luck
