Can anyone tell me why the electric anchor windlass is set up so it only works when the engine is running? I have always run the engines on my boats when using the windlass to save the battery and for control but in an emergency ( ie engine failure ) how am I going to raise my anchor to sail out or lower it to stay put ? Has anyone modified the anchor solenoid/power system so this isn't the case ? This isn't just my boat , the owner manual says specifically " the engine must be running to operate the windlass". I have a chain hook and a 40 ft piece of 3/4 inch line I can lead back to the sheet winch

I believe Beneteau does this because a lot of their boats go into charter and come from the factory with relatively small battery banks. It's basically a way to idiot proof the boat. But there's no reason it can't be bypassed.

Try using the windlass with the key just to the "on" position. I think you are overly concerned with this situation. Having the engine run to bolster that battery is a good idea- especially if you drop anchor, it drags, you retrieve the anchor and reset it elsewhere. You'll probably not have much battery left after that.

Ron, next time you are in you boat turn your key to on and then try to do anything..... The oil pressure alarm wails as soon as you turn on the key and doesn't stop until the engine starts and the oil pressure is up.

I have a 200 36CC purchased 2 yrs ago. The anchor windlass didn't work when I bought it and the previous owner said he never used it but told me that the engine needs to be running to work the windlass. I checked wiring diagrams for my boat and other Beneteaus and they all indicated a relay in the circuit was needed to operate the windlass. For 18 months, and a lot of advice from Beneteau dealers on where to look for the relay, I never found it. This past summer I broke down and paid someone to troubleshoot, locate and repair the windlass. He found that the ground that's required to operate the windlass solenoids was NEVER connected, to anything. The ground wire was run into the engine compartment and then routed under some wire harnesses, basically hidden. He connected the ground wire directly to ground, no relay and the windlass works. Because the windlass controls are on deck (no remote) I could possibly see why a relay "might " be a good idea. It could prevent accidental deployment of the anchor if you would happen to be walking on deck either at the dock or under sail.

Do you have a blower in your engine compartment? He found the blower wires were also disconnected. Does your blower run whenever the engine is running or is ot switched for temporary use when starting. I didn't think a blower was necessary with a diesel engine.

My blower turns on when the key is turned to the on position and stays on while engine is running. Purpose of the blower is to circulate air and move heat out of the engine compartment.

thank you, it looks like someone disconnected a couple of things or they were never connected to begin with.
