As the winter slowly closes out and the axis permits a different climent, as do I. Thought it would be a good time for an update on the Windlass project for Carpe Diem. Per my original design the field testing / construction is complete. I am able to recharge the twin 27 wet cells through the Battery charger (110 vac 3 amp) being fed from the onboard inverter (1000 nwattts) which is powered from the onboard house service AGM 8D battery. This is not nor will it be the "normal" method of recharging the Windlass Bank - but will absolutely work if required. The normal method of recharge will be from shore power but my design criteria has always included "sole dependency" as a first and foremost approach. The concept is proven and works for my intended purposes. I chose this approach for two reasons; 1. there will never be sufficient dry / wet cell storage on a given vessel - power is precious and those needs will continue to be either satisfied or dismissed and missed. Simply stated - if you have it use it and reap the benifits. I don't use my power for anything other than 1)safety, 2)Navigation and 3) esential comforts...in that order. As technology improves we are presented with the opportunity to increment function over form...all for the improvement of safety and comfort at sea for extended periods. If i find a way to carry more stored energy, withouth comprimising the esential, I will carry that load and feel good about it. I have towed many a sailor / sailboat to a dock who thought counter. I have included a few pictures ...winter project....as I see it the hard part is done. I will get this onboard aand sail away... just a little more self sufficient that last year. I do not like hauling that vegtable garden up while making way - my wife likes it less. I am looking forward to 0600 coffee, breakfast, sunrise and pushing a button - set sail and be done with the "chore". There is more to life than man handleing massive - cold zebra encrusted chain and then serving the salad...
