There is a lot of talk about which anchor is the best and I have eyed a couple of types thinking I would change. But last week I was anchored with my overnight danford well set for a good night’s sleep. In the morning refreshed I hauled up my hook and in the flutes was a large head of mud. While working the mud off, I found two palm-sized clams. Well now, will a Bruce pull up some nice tidbits?

"Best" Anchor Bull....

There isn't a "best" anchor. Each anchor type works best in different bottoms. Because your particular anchor didn't work at any specific location doesn't mean it won't work elsewhere. Please consult with many previously written materials (i.e., West Marine Advisor and catalog for anchors, same for BoatUS, and other "anchor" books). Those will explain the importance of the TYPE of bottom (grass, mud, sand, coral, et. al.) and how different types of anchors work in each. The best advice ever presented is to have two different types of anchors, especially if you move around a lot and are anchoring in mud one day, sand the next, and hopefully, coral - the fish sure look better with the coral behind them!

Best for clams ?

I checked the West Marine material you mentioned, but found no reference to the anchors' suitability for retrieving clams or any other kind of dinner. When going after shark or any other fish, should we look for a lighter anchor to improve throwing accuracy, or a heavier one to increase impact ? I await the seasoned sailors' replies.

Anchor Fishing

Seems West Marine's Advisors have been off the mark for many years, in not reporting the retrieval abilities and characteristics of their anchors. In addition to clams, sharks and the like, we rcently retrieved a trans-Pacific telephone cable with our Bruce anchor. There are many uses for anchors in addition to the generally accepted practices. These should be reported by all of the stores selling anchors immediately. Or else the Truth In Advertising types will have to get after them!
