I installed an anchor roller on my O'Day 222 a few years ago for a Danforth Anchor. Then, I was given a Fortress Anchor by a friend of mine who was selling his Chris Craft 24'. The anchor roller that I installed is for the Bruce, but my Fortress works great with it. I installed the roller on an angle toward Port and I also installed a Herreshoff cleat directly behind it for tying off the line. Also, the angle of the roller works nicely with two snatch blocks attached to the bottom of both of my Starboard lifeline rails for those rare occasions when I need to be at my engine and be able to raise my anchor from the cockpit.. The only problem that arises with this anchor set-up is that the chain connections need to slide through the roller without getting caught. I'm using Nylon braid line to a swivel to chain with regular shackles. I tightened the pins of shackles as tight as I could get them and peened the bolts and cut the ears off the pins. This allows the chain to go through pretty easy without any hangups. I also have a short lanyard tied to the base of my bow pulpit with a stainless steel hook to act as a chain keeper for the anchor. Last year I took an old milk crate and cut it down and spliced two handles to it for holding my anchor line. I have this crate tied to the deck. The crate comes in handy not only for containing the anchor line, but it can be carried back to the cockpit for doing my thing with the snatch blocks. I haven't had any problem with my anchor hitting my bow when I raise or lower it. Also, I have no bail on the roller to keep the line from jumping out, and I prefer it this way because of the times that I've had to raise my anchor with the line at acute angles. It's sometimes easier to pull the line around the bow rail than to have to pull it at an acute angle of the roller with a bail attached. Perhaps a detachable pin would work better than a bail in this situation, but so far I haven't had the need for neither. Do I love my anchor roller? You betcha'! It's a lot better than what I had, and it's a heck of a lot easier on the "Ole guy."
