Very nice! Thinking WAY out of the box. That would sure make a great article for the MainBrace!

That's really great work. Yes it costs a lot but at least you got a deal on the windlass. I see you used aluminum to make the riser that gets the furler up out of the way. If you want one in stainless I have plenty of scrap material, I can plasma cut an identical piece for you and drill the same holes. Since its SS it will won't be as thick as that chunk of aluminum and your bolts will fit better, it will be stronger, and you won't have to worry about bi-metal corrosion. Plus, I have polishing wheels so i'll make into a mirror finish!
Just send me a PM with the dimensions or a drawing. I have the same CD stem fitting so I can be sure the bolt holes line up, I can mail it in a regular USPS padded envelope, won't be too heavy.

Exactly What I was thinking. Splitting the hatch cover and putting the windlass right up front is brilliant IMO

I might just do that I used to be a welder fab for 20+ years but those days are long gone along with all the welders/scrap buffers ect live in a condo now so what I can have in my tiney 1 car garage has to be thought out :)

Give me a little bit though gonna need to take a break on everything soon. Not only been doing the windlass thing but wife has me making all new cabinet doors for the kitchen and I am getting tiard of my honey doo list haven't sailed in 3 weeks and its killin me.
For a little while I just want to sit and look at it hehe

k guys sorry if I keep reviving this thread this should be last update but I said I was going to switch to all chain rode so thought I'd update on that this should be last change I make that I know of except for taking cloud diver up on his offer of the small stainless piece to replace the aluminum that I have there on the roller cup.

Anyway the chain.
Pro's
Works way better doesn't tangle up at all.
Fits in the anchor locker takes up WAY less room.

Con's
Heavy, 1/4" 100 feet is 78 lbs......does it make a difference on the boat sitting in water? No appreciable difference you gotta be thinking though if 78 lbs makes that big of a difference then nobody would ever be able to move in the boat. If your racing then yah I gotta say every pound make a difference but for me? no cant say it makes any difference. maybe 1/8th of an inch further in the water but that's a guess I didn't see anything.
Loud
Haven't used it but assume that it will jerk since chain doesn't have any give but the loop it makes should prevent most of that.

OK with all that said.

With a vertical windlass 80' of chain will fit in the deep part. I put an additional 20' and 20' of rope in the high part of the locker that is attached but is the end of the line not the beginning.
100' will NOT fit in the bottom of the locker. Let me rephrase it will fit but you have to move things around once it's most of the way in.
With a horizontal windlass all of it would have fit no issue. BUT with a horizontal windlass it would not have worked with the roller furling.

In conclusion I would have just went with 80' of chain but a ratio of 5 to 1 is recommended for anchoring even with all chain. so even with 100 feet I'm still limited to 20' if using the standard guidelines. Have also seen 3 to 1 being ok even that only gets ya to 33 ft.

Most of the area I anchor in the keys is only 15ft give or take but I like safe than sorry.

Lastly.....
Am I happy? Yep love it. Excluding what I paid for everything and the 3 weeks I spent putting it together and the 3+ months sitting in the house trying to figure out how to make it all work.
With it all done I love it. Love the remote although might have to change the location of the receiver believe I have it buried to far.

Won't have anything more to contribute unless someone has a specific question I can answer. Thanks for everyone's help while I was doing this as far as what's behind certain fiberglass panels and such.

Well I love it, I'm glad it worked out. If you can find any excuse to bump the thread again, do it! Video of the windlass in action maybe??
