1/4 G40 HT and 5/8 Nylon
As a rule of thumb, a 30 Foot Sailboat should be rigged to accommodate loadings of:2100 Lbs pull on a permanent mooring, 1400 Lbs on a storm anchor, and 700 Lbs on a working anchor.1/4" G30 chain has a working load limit of 1,300 Lbs, and 1/4" G40 H.T. chain a WLL of 2600 Lbs.½" Three-Strand Nylon rope has a WLL of 709 Lbs, and ½" Double Braid a WLL of 816 Lbs. 5/8" 3-Strand has a WLL of 1114 Lbs 5/8", and double Braid a WLL of 1275 Lbs.3/4" 3-Strand has a WLL of 1598 Lbs.Accordingly:1/4" G30 (BBB or PC) chain is suited for a working anchor (and nearly suitable for a storm anchor), whereas 1/4" G40 H.T. is suitable for a permanent mooring.½" Diameter Nylon is suitable for a working anchor, and 3/4" Nylon for a storm anchor. We lived on the hook for nine years, on a C&C29. I’ve been very satisfied with 1/4" High Test chain, and 5/8" Three-Strand Nylon, but I’d certainly like to try a plaited rode (‘Brait’, etc)for the reason others have stated. FWIW,Gord May
