Topping Lift
We have a 1991 Legend 37.5. It has a split backstay. The split occurs about 10-11 feet above the cockpit sole - too far to reach to hank on a riding sail. We just purchased a new main sail. Along with the new main we changed the Dutchman from the loop system to a fixed system - fixed lenght topping lift/halyard arrangement. The new topping lift is made from the same coated wire that is on lifelines. We converted an old jib (from a much smaller boat)to a riding sail. The current plan (we launch next week) is to hank the jib onto the topping lift and use the main halyard to raise the riding sail. This way we do not have to deal with the split backstay.

I have a C30 with the split backstay and I hank the anchor riding sail on one to the two splits, haul it up to the junction of the two backstays into the single stay and it works just fine. On my boat, that puts it just above the wind shadow of the bimini and the dodger and although small, it reduces the swing at anchor significantly. Fair winds dave
