sounds silly but
i usually anchor from the stern . it puts more air into the cabin and the boat doesnt sail on the rode as all. it also makes anchoring easier when droping under sail as you have forward movement already and so you just drift past the spot you want to anchor with a jib up in light air or just down and a couple of s curves to slow the boat in heavier air. i find that anchoring from the bow is a pain off the sails. seems to me that when the boat stops forward motion that the bow drifts down from the wind and then the rode is under the boat. yes i could start the motor but dont you hate to rely on it for everything. plus i hate the noise. its so much easier to drop off the back and drift out a few feet and set the anchor with the forward speed you already have , tie the line off and leisurely go forward to drop the jib. also for picking up i bungee the tiller off center to bring the boat off the side of the anchor.when the boat is free it has to lose the motion (in revverse )and start again forward which gives time to stow the anchor and raise the jib to sail out of the anchorage. if im sailing on a down wind tack to leave the anchorage, i make a quick 360 to raise the main and off i go. maybe takes me 2 to 3 minutes all told. by the way when the water get noisy on the stern at night i know the wind has picked up and simply let the boat drift backand tie in the traditional way from the stern but the rode and anchor is stored aft. yes i have a hook forward too but rarely use it.dont be so quick to get the hook forward. good luck.
