I hang my anchor on the bow pulpit but have the chain and rode in a stern storage compartment. Has anyone come up with a way to store the chain and rode in the bow area on the C-22 (mine is a '82 model). I was thinking of some kind of pipe from the deck to the forward storage under the V-berth (which I never use), but this would be kind of difficult to get the line back down the pipe when the anchor is retrieved(toothpaste back into the tube situation). I checked the archives and could find no discussion of this.

sounds silly but

i usually anchor from the stern . it puts more air into the cabin and the boat doesnt sail on the rode as all. it also makes anchoring easier when droping under sail as you have forward movement already and so you just drift past the spot you want to anchor with a jib up in light air or just down and a couple of s curves to slow the boat in heavier air. i find that anchoring from the bow is a pain off the sails. seems to me that when the boat stops forward motion that the bow drifts down from the wind and then the rode is under the boat. yes i could start the motor but dont you hate to rely on it for everything. plus i hate the noise. its so much easier to drop off the back and drift out a few feet and set the anchor with the forward speed you already have , tie the line off and leisurely go forward to drop the jib. also for picking up i bungee the tiller off center to bring the boat off the side of the anchor.when the boat is free it has to lose the motion (in revverse )and start again forward which gives time to stow the anchor and raise the jib to sail out of the anchorage. if im sailing on a down wind tack to leave the anchorage, i make a quick 360 to raise the main and off i go. maybe takes me 2 to 3 minutes all told. by the way when the water get noisy on the stern at night i know the wind has picked up and simply let the boat drift backand tie in the traditional way from the stern but the rode and anchor is stored aft. yes i have a hook forward too but rarely use it.dont be so quick to get the hook forward. good luck.

anchor rode

Bruce............... Having the anchor rode in the stern and anchor on the bow pulpit must be a real pain. I have a '77 and I thought that the through deck pipe was factory installed...... but maybe one of the PO installed it. You can buy a pipe from West Marine (and other places) for about $13 page 476 of the catalog ..... or westmarine.com. I stow the line part of the rode in the small area at the most forward area of the boat. A decorative board separates this area from the V-berth. I simply leave the chain part of the rode on the deck.... and the anchor hangs from the bow pulpit. The pipe opening is 1/2 inch..... you would have no problem stowing your anchor line. Good luck!
