anchor locker drain tube leak question

I haven't tore into it yet but I'm 99% sure the tube that comes out of the anchor locker on my 1986 that drains out the bow of the boat is cracked or something along those lines.

When I'm in larger waves it's pushing the water up threw the tube and is leaking into the cabin.

So I took the wood panel that's inside in the front of the v-birth only to find a fiberglass panel behind that and it's one piece all the way up and back to the back of the boat for the inside liner.

Most likely I plan on cutting an access off the bottom of the panel so that the wood will cover it up basically just cutting the bottom of the v where it comes down at the bottom that should allow me to reattach the wood trim cover so you cant see the piece I cut out.

BUT

Before I cut this off I figured I'd ask if anyone else had this issue and see what there solution was.

The only thing I'm afraid of is that I wont have enough room after I cut the panel off to see or do anything to fix the issue making it a waste of time and I hate cutting anything off that I don't have to.

The only other solution I even have that's remotely a fix would be to drill the entire drain hole out larger and inserting a larger tube in the hole and then using 5200 around it. It's entirely possible that's the best fix but I'd really like to look in there and see if I'm right and it's cracked to begin with.

Anyway

Solutions?
Suggestions?
Things others have tried if they had the same issue?

Thanks

Have you checked you bow eye. On the C-27 it is really close to the water line. I was looking at mine the other day and will need to repair it. I have about a pint of water in the locker under the v-berth and a rusty water trail inside the bow that leads right to the bow eye.

naa wish it was the bow eye would be easy fix but it's two much water and mines in really good condition.

I'm just gonna have to cut the fiberglass out behind the wood and hope that I can get to the leak.

Like I said only other solution I can think of would be to drill the entire drain out larger and put a sleeve in and glue it in just wish I knew what it looked like.

I'm venturing a guess that they made it a lot like they did the cock pit drain that I had a leak in awhile back with the brass threw hull insert. I had an issue with the cockpit ones where they had no flange on them and it really surprised me that it was just a simple straight tube glued in on the ends.

I love my boat but after I've tore threw the ins and outs of the boat places you weren't supposed to see they did some crappy stuff in a few places but doesn't make me love it less guess it just gives me more to do lol....

I guess I'll find out whats behind there tomorrow or the next and take a picture if I remember.

well worked on it yesterday after cutting the panel out there is about 4 inches to get your hand into and could see the drain tube.

Writing this sort as a historical record someone could search in the future I guess.

Ran a rose into the anchor locker ran water and presto water ran out in that cavity instantly so knew it was the tube.

They made the boat the tube is around 5 inches long and they fiber glassed it in on both ends with zero flaring. My assumption is that with the age and twisting of the boat in seas it broke the fiberglass loose on the anchor locker side.

My fix? or hopeful fix it's curring right now.
Get a rubber glove and dump 5200 into my hand and squish it everywhere around the tube jamming it up around it in mass quanities and hoping that it get to where it needs too go with enough pressure pushing up on it and enough material used up an entire caulking tube of 5200 but don't know if it's fixed until I can put water back in the anchor locker but I'm "fairly" confident that it was fixed.

Wish me luck. :)

I have the same issue. Some PO brutally hacked a hole in that panel using a DRILL, drilling a bunch of holes in a roughly rectangular pattern until they hacked their way through. There is a huge gob of hard, whitish material up in there where they made some kind of "repair" which does not drain satisfactorily and appears to also leak. I had pics of this abortion, but lost them in a computer crash.

I'm going to re-open the case this month, and redo EVERYTHING up in there. I'm going to remount the bow eye (it was very loose and presumably leaking when I bought the boat), re-bed the cleats (one of them is loose and definitely leaking) re-bed the pulpit, the whole nine yards. I figure I'll have to cut the whole lower portion off of that panel to properly access the locker drain, install at least two more Beckson ports in the anchor locker to get at the cleats, and who knows what I'll have to do to get at the bow eye.

It promises to be a lot of fun. Catalina did a really great job making it damn near impossible to do ANY kind of maintenance or repair anywhere up in the forepeak of these new design boats.

They make some nice locking water proof hatches for kayaks that are pretty big.

well the only thing I'm thankful for is the fact that overtop of that fiberglass is a wood panel so now that I have it all fixed once the wood panel is back on there it should look original again.

Yah this is the first boat I've ever owned that the manufacturer really had no intention of letting people ever working on the actual hull of the boat or using or cleaning the bilges. Kind of irritating at times.

Oh man, I wish you guys, (or a previous owner in dixiedawg's case) had searched here first before going and cutting away fiberglass to find the "tube"; this is a well-documented issue with the 1986 and newer Catalina 22 boats and it has been discussed on these forums before.

The common fix is to simply use 4200 or 5200 and glue in a thin-walled tube that just fits through the existing anchor locker drain. When I did my 87, I used refrigerator ice-maker tubing. No cutting required.

Somebody here, I think it's AZguy, has a through hull fitting on the port side of the locker. Maybe he can chime in; I always thought that was better than what I have.

I'd like a larger diameter drain, that was harder to clog. A BB would just about plug mine.

On my '89, it exits just above the water line and below the boot stripe on the port side. Is this different than others?

different than mine anyway mine exits way higher and dead center on the bow.

Yours looks like an improvement.

Great timing Allen. Cleaning the bilge storage under the V birth a few days ago, I discovered about a half cup of dark water in the one next to the anchor locker. Now I know where it came from. Mind you, it has not been in the water for six months, so it does not evaporate very well. I checked just now and my 72 has NO drain for the locker. I saw another thread on this and some had rigged a hook and strap to mount the rode on the bow rail until it dries and can be put away. ( great place to fall my dumb self off the boat) Guess that's what I have to do also. You're right though, I installed a drain from the sink to the scuppers. The original drain had been heavily glassed over. With my bad back it took 31 days because it is so hard to get to. I'll post pics soon because it works and can be disconnected in a minute.

Yeah that's the setup I was talking about. Allen and I just have a small hole in the chine about 2" below the bow eye, with no fitting at all. I think I might retro mine like yours, and just plug my drain altogether and be done with it.

What year/sail number is your boat, just out of curiosity?

I'd have to go look. I replaced the plywood up there but I don't remember what it looked like behind it!

No worries. I've been poking around the forums at Catalina Direct, and I think I have it figured out. It seems simple enough: install one through hull fitting in the bottom of the anchor locker and another one in the port side of the forward V berth locker, then connect the two with a rubber hose.

With your permission, Allen, I'll post pics of the process in this thread when I get to it in a few days. :)
