I want to buy a new anchor line and chain for my newly acquired 29.5. Looking for information on thickness of line and length of both line and chain. The boat came with a fortress anchor , but the line/chain is old.

Does your boat have a windlass?...

If so that will determine the chain link size. If not, 5/16th inch is a common size. Several galvanized grades to choose from; proof coil is the lowest grade followed by BBB, high test, grade 70. Our boat came with 50 feet of high test with 250 feet of 5/8th inch three strand nylon rode. Of course our boat displaces 30,000 pounds. If you boat comes in at around 8,000 pounds perhaps 7/16th inch three strand should work. I would stay with 50 feet of 5/16th inch chain to help with catenary. Of course this all assumes that your cruising anchorages are mostly mud and/or sand. If not then you need to rethink your anchoring system. Terry

another hunter 28.5 opinion

buy 200' of 1/2 inch nylon anchor line, buy 6' to 10 ' of larger than normal (Stainless if youy can aford it) chain all the shackels and hardware you need. Mount a stainless U pad, thru bolted in the stern part of the anchor well. Cut a small notch in the bow end of the anchor compartment door so you can close it while having the anchor in use. Also get the mud flukes for the Fortress anchor.

Anchor rode

Anchor rodes should be a minimum of 7:1 scope. If you anchor in up to 30 feet of water, you will need about 210 ft of rode. the length of chain should be no less than the length of the boat so 30 feet should be what you need.(50feet would be better) With 200 ft of 5/8 line attached. use a thimble and shackles or do a chain splice. A thimble will have less chaffe and last longer. If you haven't allready purchased an anchor, go one size larger than recomended for added security. It sucks to wake up to the sound of the anchor dragging and water splashing on rocks close by!

ANCHOR LINE REQUIREMENTS

I HAVE A 29.5 AND USE A 1/2INCH LINE AND ABOUT 20FT OF CHAIN. I ALSO USE A FORTRESS F-16 AND HAVE HAD NO PROBS. I WOULD UPGRADE ANCHOR FOR STORM CONDITIONS.
