Anchor line

Hi,Anyone ever run into buying an older boat, which was neglected or not used much and find the anchor rope kinked and stained with either rust or mild-discoloration? Any recommendations no how I can return the white color to the rope? Any best ways to "un-kink" the rope? It's kinked like an arthritic hand! *laughing*Also, with the line, being kinked and not used in such a long time, does that become a safety factor in it's holding strength? It was stored in the compartment under the cockpit. Should I use this anchor line or should I consider buying another one? The boat came with about 150' rope and 6' of chain. Chain is in good condition and the shackle on the anchor end looks almost new, but the shackle at the rope-to-chain looks pretty discolored if not rusty.Would soaking this rope in water, help loosen it up? Or should I invest a new rope/chain rode package?ThanksMark Reiland

I once....

soaked my anchor rode in a bleach solution due to it becoming smelly, but it didn't help the discoloration. I don't know if this is recommended though. I think once the nylon becomes stiff and kinky, it is still strong but difficult to manage. I usually retire it and hang it in the garage to pull my kids broke down car home or some other household task. I don't think you'll be able to renew its old soft properties. Good luck

Concern

Hey Mark,My greater concern for you is how strong is this rope? In some of my reading about the uses for different types of cordage on boats, knots always reduce the tensile strenght of rope. I think that the kinks would have the same or greater effect. My choice would be to replace the anchor rode.Terry

Cheap Insurance!

Buy new "marine grade" line..You don't want to be sitting in a storm at the end of that old line saying, ya but I saved $50!!!!Buy suitable line from a Marine store (not the corner drug or hardware store. Check with "Defenders" on-line.Good Luck!

Warren,Ohhh yes, I've been strongly considering buying a new anchor rope/chain package and yes, it'll be a quality marine grade anchor line. After some feedback and further looking at this anchor rope, I felt it would be good to keep it, but only use it in emergencies. I'd rather have a high quality anchor/anchor rope/chain holding my boat at night then find me 'n the boat floating/wandering into dangers unseen. Appreciate the feedback. Mark
