Tapping the mast could be as simple as wear at the wire where it goes in and out of the mast at grommets. with your luck its the masthead grommet ! Walmart sells a solar walklight for 97 cents that you take the stick off of and just tape it to the jib halyard or main shackle (with a retrieval cord tied to it) and hoist up near the masthead. I have even toyed with the idea of taping it to the mast head and just leaving it there, comes on at night, goes off in day.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I just rewired the entire mast this spring. The wire to my anchor light is brand new 14/2 gauge wire. I did new mast connections and a brand new deck connection.

I second the idea of a sealed LED light. If your going to go through all that work and "overkill" it, the sealed LED will top it off.

Considering the anchor light should be shown 360 degrees... Last year I was anchored behind another boat that had a light hanging in the foretriangle. It was a breezy night, with little wavelets on the water. It was easy to see the shadow cast by the mast, and it was a considerable size shadow. Obviously, the farther the shadow went, the wider it became. As the boat swayed back and forth with the breeze, the light came and went. So if you are thinking one light hung on the boat can be seen from everywhere, don't bet the Coastie that hands you the ticket that it's "Perfectly legal". A few years ago Boot Harbor in the Keys ticketed everone using a solar light hanging from the boom, but they said it was not a 2-mile certified light. Two miles visibility in a harbor maybe 1/4 mile across? The law is the law, no matter how much sense it makes.

Mast lights never quit when the mast is down and accessible. I think the mast light god gives extra points if the light quits the the night you need it, even more points if you thought of checking it first before your trip (and, of course, it worked then). So I carry one of those Davis spares, just in case.

This is a timely post. My superexpensive Lopolight just bit the dust last week. Actually, it only half bit the dust. It's a combination steaming / all around light. It now no longer steams or lights all around, just the back half works. I have ordered a new light from Lunasea. It's not as superexpensive as the Lopolight. The only saving grace is that the Lopolight came on my boat when I bought it, so I don't feel totally ripped off. It sure was pretty when it worked.
