Anchor holding sail with no backstay?

I wish to add an anchor holding sail to my Hunter 216, but it has no backstay. Could I just hank one onto the boom topping lift and sheet it off to the stern cleats? I know that I'd have to add a line from the cleats to the aft end of the boom to keep the boom from swinging. My main concern was whether I'm overstressing the topping lift. Please Email me at:rcowgill@cfl.rr.com. Thanks! Bob

Topping lift

will work fine we do it with our 28.5 and it works really well to stop the boat from swinging. Cliff

Main halyard and wire luff

One solution is to have a wire luff sewn into your anchor sail. Rig it with the main halyard and a rope downhaul tied off near the stern. If you don't want to sew in the luff wire, make one with loops on each end, attach the top of the wire and the sail's head to the main halyard, tie off the wire to a stern cleat, put a downhaul on the sail and you're set. Remember, it's just a weather vane, it won't be pulling a lot of pressure.
