I know that this question is very basic, but I am very new to sailing. I have a 1980 Oday 28. How big of an anchor do I need for this boat, and what size line do I need for it? Also does anyone know the dimensions of the Anchor box on a 28. My boat is in NY and I am in FL. Thanks

The Delta works fine
My '85 O'28 had a 14# Delta with it when we bought her. I was a little skeptical about the size, but we have had the boat anchored in all conditions including a 40 knot squall with no problems. I have 18' of 3/8" chain that helps to get the anchor down deep into the sand or mud with 175' of 7/16" double braide nylon line. My primary anchor is a 22# Bruce with 20' of 3/8" chain and 200' of 1/2" double braid. The Bruce will not fit in the locker, it rides in the roller, but the locker will hold the Delta, a 14# Danforth spare, and all the chain and line. It is a tight fit but it works I don't have the exact dimensions of the locker but it's approximately the size of the 14# danforth plus 2 to 3 inches. PM

Willy44 I too have 1980 O'day 28. Due to the fact that the bow navigation lights are deck mounted the ability to install an anchor roller is restricted. You MAY be able to fit a plow or small bruce in the locker ( I have no idea the locker dimensions) but the locker looks as though it will accomodate a danforth or danforth stlye the best. I have a steel danforth as my primary with 200' of 1/2" rode and 20' feet of chain. My back-up and lunch anchor is an aluminum danforth with 8' of chain and 100' of 1/2" rode. The aluminum anchor doesn't set too readily but the steel anchor has never given me a problem. I anchor mostly in sand but occasionally in rocks. I have heard that the amount of chain should equal your boat length. Hmmmmm... I don't know about that but it can' hurt. Again the locker looks as though it is designed for a danforth or other such folding anchor. It is flatter than it is deep. Mike S/B Pitterpat, Lake Huron
