I'm looking to by a danforth style anchor for my 1981 Hunter 27, but when I look at the recommended size anchors for my boat, the dimensions seem too big for my anchor well. Should I get a smaller size than the ones recommended?

I suggest get an appropriate anchor

We have an 82 H27 and I assume the well is the same size. I doubt if it was designed for an anchor. Ours holds the rode, bow dock lines, and an "emergency" line (and the fitting for the fresh water tank). Our anchor is on a bow roller installed by a previous owner. There are other systems, of course, such as hanging it from the pulpit rails. I carry a second anchor and rode in the starboard lazerette (sp?). I would think that the system you need is the one that will work for you specific need for anchor access. In any case, I think your first priority is the size and style of anchor/rode that will do the job in your environment. Like all safety equipment function outweighs all other concerns. Andy Baroque

Primarily mud

I'll be anchoring mostly in mud. The fortress anchor that came with the boat fit in the anchor locker, but I lost it and as I look for replacements, the sizes all seem to exceed the dimensions of the locker, meaning that the previous anchor was really too small for the boat. I guess I'll try to hang it from the bow pulpit.

Go big...

While I'm not the expert at anchoring all that I've read about danforth anchors suggest that you should always upscale rather than get the lesser. It costs a little more but for sure you don't want to chance too much slippage due to lack of the right size. I use two #13 with 1/2" line and 5' of galvanized chain for rode during storms and they've held fine. Bottoms that I ususally find are sand or mud. Good luck.

I would think 12H

I would think the 12H would be small enough and would make an excellent anchor for you. I have the 25 Hunter and I am looking for the right size danforth also. The 12H is not big but has great holding ability for its size. The 13S is almost as good and Held my Vega 27 in a storm of 50+ knots. The wind blew so hard the inflatable dingy we had was in mid air steady as a rock 3 feet above the water.
