I sail a 240 displacing 3600 lbs. in the Potomac/Chessie - bottom is largely mud to sand. I've a #8 Danforth-type anchor that hasn't failed, yet, but can't sleep sticking my head up every half hour to check for drift... Would like an additional anchor but can't get a straight answer on what kind. Kingston Quickset has been suggested. Any suggestions out there? Thanks, Drew

BRUCE

Drew, I've been using a BRUCE anchor as my primary anchor for four seasons in the bay and its' tributaries without any problem at all (1983 H34). I anchor out alot so I've been in plenty of windy conditions. It's never once dragged on me and I've anchored in winds above 25kts and gusts over 40kts. As everyone will tell you an important aspect is the chain and scope. WM suggests one foot of chain for each foot of boat length. The minimum scope I use for overnight has been 7:1 and the highest 10:1 in the bigger winds. I carry a WM Fortress knockoff as my secondary with about half the suggested chain but have never had to use it. Bottom line; I sleep well on the hook. Good luck. JM

weight is the key

I have a H23 and just went to an all chain (1/4 inch) rode. It is the weight of the chain which will hold the boat more so than the anchor which gives the bite. My experience in the bay is the mud has enough suction that an all chain rode will hold just fine. I use 7:1 to 10:1 scope and a long snubber and have had no problems. When using a 8Lbs. Danforth and all rope, had the boat drag when the anchor fouled as a result of the boat sailing at anchor as H23 are prone to due. This may be over kill but I sleep well at anchor now!
