How much anchor chain have you blokes got?
When I bought my boat new, it only had 10 meters of chain and 30 meters of rope rode.
I now have 48 meters of chain, but think it might be to much weight over the front end.
Where I live, we have fairly strong currents, so need some holding power with the anchor.
What do you blokes think?
All the best, Ross.

Really depends on a number of factors. Type of anchor, type of bottom, typical anchoring depth, typical prevailing wind/current, to name a few. "Typical" (if there is such a thing) minimum would be one boat length, or about 10 meters, of chain. I use 50 feet of chain, 200 ft of 1/2" nylon 3 strand, and a 22 pound Delta anchor on my boat which generally works well in the Chesapeake Bay mud where I cruise, and doesn't seem to make the boat bow-heavy, even with a full forward water tank.

Because your post isn't specific to the Catalina 309, you might want to ask the same question at sailnet.com, where you'll get responses from a much larger group.

Thanks for your reply boys.
I figure if you want a scope of 5:1 you would need at least 15 metres of chain.
Deeper water would need more.
