Hard to tell, it depends on the gypsy for the windlass. It may be possible and cheaper buy a new gypsy than to replace the chain. Check with Lewmar about gypsy sizes.

...Thanks ....
I have a spare gypsy here, and on one half it says "A, 5/16" the other side is "B, 5/16". not sure which chain it is made for. EVEN HAS THE STRIPPER. Not even a mfg stamp ! Hhmmm...

There should be a chain size stamped on the gypsy. Last gypsy we bought cost us a grand, so it may be cheaper to sell the new chain and buy the right size.

Is it possible to return this chain and get the correct size?

Stepping back a little further raises the question of - Does the smaller 1/4 chain have a high enough strength rating to hold your boat?

Sell the chain privately. Buy the right stuff. Do you have a marine consignment shop nearby? Craig's list? Maybe a local FB trade site? Changing the gypsy could be a problem and you will still have chain that could be under rated for your boat. Mistakes happen. Take a 25% loss on the chain and move on.
