Looking to replace nylon rode with 100-150' of chain. WM must think their chain is gold plated, they are asking $4.50 a foot for 5/16 HT. Any suggestions for the S.Cal area? Defender has it for less than $3/ft, but shipping is expensive. Thanks. Bob

Industrial supply or forestry supply folks

Galvanized chain is all the same if it is made in the USA.

Ross, I do not think so.

Ross: I do not think that all galvanized chain is the same. If it was, why would the marine supply stores sell different grades of the same sized chain. I got WM to price match. I do not know if they will still do this or not. Some of the stores will only price match on the same item from a local company. When you purchase chain for your boat be sure that it will be compatible with the windlass that you will need to retrieve it. You may want to check with Granger or McMaster Carr and see what their prices look like. I am sure that you match the marine specs to an industrial spec.

Ross..

If you're using it with a windlass it must be a certain link diameter and size and that particular size is made for marine and very few other uses. Trust me any old galvanized chain does NOT fit a windlass! I did find a guy in Ohio who had windlass size chain for relatively cheap but you had to buy the whole drum. Find a buddy and split a drum! Sorry I can't remember the name of th distributor in Ohio...

Steve, The grades of galvanized chain

That I would be concerned with are all so simular that American made is all that I look for. But I live by the theory that nothing too strong ever broke. So if The book and They say use 5/16 I use 3/8. I don't have a windlass I haul line and chain in until nothing will move and start the engine to break the anchor out. I can still haul twenty feet of 3/8 chain and a 35 lb anchor.

Try looking in the phone book

under "wire rope" or "slings" or "rigging". A call to a local crane company can also help steer you to a good local supplier. Here is a link to an article that might help you understand the different types of chain. triple B, proof test, grade 30, grade 40, and high test, All chain is NOT created equal. Whatever you do don't buy chain that is not stamped with it's respective rating. There is some cheap chinese crap out there that isn't worth its weight as scrap. Find a good supplier that knows the difference between different grades of chain.

Bob, I bought from WM.....

I went on the internet to look for the chain, priced it, plus delivery.. Then I went to WM and asked if they could give me a competative price showing them what I could buy at other internet marine stores. I told them I really want to do the business with them because I didn't want to deal with the time and transportation costs. They dropped the price to a reasonable level and I bought 275ft. abe

Minney's

If you can get up to Newport Beach, Minney's has chain for about half the price of WM. If you have never been to Minney's, they are a great place to shop for that used part that you are looking for.
