Anchor chain to rope connection

I have a new C-36 MKII. It has a Maxwell 800 vertical anchor windlass. On the Great Lakes it is normally good practice to use chain for the first 30 or 40 feet for a boat this size and then use rope anchor rode. My question is what do you think is the best connection between the rope and the chain. A little background follows. In the past, without a windlass, I shackled a thimble on the anchor rode to the chain. However a chandlery has suggested spicing a 3 strand rope to the chain so that it can run right through the windlass which would simplify raising the anchor. I am concerned about the following: I tend to like braided anchor rode as it doesn't kink/snarl like 3 strand rope. I am suspicious of a stranded rope to chain splice. I think it would be quite subject to wear and more likely to fail suddenly compared to a thimble shackle connection. On the other hand, with a shakle connection, how hard is it to switch from the rope drum to the chain wheel on the Maxwell? (I am told they operate independently) Any other suggestions?

New Rode from Maxwell

Greetings, I called Maxwell to discuss the issue. They prepared a new anchor rode of chain braided to braided line. My previous rode was three strand and knuckled in the windlass. I am happy with the solution. BTW, I now have 70 feet chain. We sail in the SFO Bay area. Best regards, Kerry

Thanks Kerry - a bit more info desired

Kerry, thanks for your reply. It sounds like your experience with twisted rope is similar to mine. It was interesting to note that Maxwell made the splice with braided rope. Is the braided rope splice they made essentially the same as an eye splice around the chain link? Did they use any kind of thimble to take the wear? The reason I ask is that I know how to splice braided rope and have a proper fid for 5/8" rope however I am wondering about protection for wear at the loop.

Splice reply

Hello Malcom, I think it is spliced to the chain. It has been a while and not top of mind. I will be going to the boat this weekend and will check. My problem was the three strand rope would knuckle as it came through the whinch. This made it very hard to deploy the rode. The braid rode was the answer. More later, Best regards, Kerry
