Anchor chain price/location

Our old anchor chain has done us well, for quite some time. :)

We use about 200 Ft. of 1/4 inch HT.

I am now thinking it's time to replace it. I first called around to see if I can re-galvanize it. But after calling around there is not a place in Az. that is willing to do it.

I THINK I remember a thread on the board that gave a contact for low cost, new chain in Az. or Southern Cal. that I can drive to and pick it up. I tried searching but did not find it. If anyone remembers the place, can you re-post it for me?

THANKS....

Greg

Greg,

I got nine at Fastenal (Annapolis) the price was similar to other retailers but the shipping was a lot less because they ship the chain to the store from their distribution center using their own trucks. This was a few years back. You may also want to try to get with another boat owner to split a full barrel (400ft) which will make the cost even more affordable. I have also seen ACCO chain at Lowes. Your mileage may vary.

Del,

Knot knowing how deep your waters are or bottom type, is 200' of 1/4" chain necessary?
It may come down to what you are comfortable with, I can't say. I never liked pulling many feet of wet chain, gloves no gloves, slippery or no slip. It's much easier pulling wet rode than chain.

Whatever the manuf.'s suggest for anchor rode size I would stick to. But all chain, this is normally for deep water boats. Anchor weights & types are for boat sizes & weights.

I have a C30 with 250' of 1/2' rode. Added to this is 25' of 1/2" S.S. chain. What to remember is the type of anchor, bottom type, correct scope, & most importantly, the ability to keep the shank part down. The chain weight and shank angle is what secures the anchor, not so much the flukes or plow.

Different type anchors work best in specific bottoms. Again, the trick is scope, fluke type & angle of pull on the shank, that's what digs your anchor in. You want to pull more horizontal rather than vertically. A more vertical pull can unseat holding power.

Your choices are all chain or, rope spindle & chain. It may also be more of a personal preference. I myself hate galvanized chain, I also hate rust.

Ask yourself, in my waters, do I need all chain, do I have the correct anchor size/weight/type, can I go rope-swivel-chain? Is a different size or style of anchor better suited for me & my area of sail? Questions, questions, questions.

Captn,

Thanks for the put, but we are set on replacing our original setup after all of these years with it. It has seen us safely through 2 hurricane near misses and MANY storms during our cruising.

In fact, I am reducing the length a bit down, from 250 to 200 ft. We never did go by the published "recommendations" as we figure it cheep insurance. ;) AND, it keeps the admiral happy!!! :D

I am going with 1/4" G43 as well, for a 27' boat and will be in Baja and the Sea for the first year or so. What anchor did you use as a main?

I was thinking 200' as well.

Miti,

You can see a lot of info on our web site (listed below). We departed the San Francisco Bay and went down the coast. We spent about 4 years in the Sea of Cortez.

GREAT PLACE AND GREAT CRUISING!!!! :D

For our main system we used a 35 Lb. CQR with 250 Ft. of 1/4 HT chain and 50 Ft. followed with 1/2 inch nylon 3 strand.

For our second system (almost never used) we have a 15 Kg. Bruce with about 50 Ft. of 1/4 HT chain and 200 Ft. of 1/2 inch nylon.

Any questions, just ask.

Mitiempo, Maine Sail has a "new generation" anchor on his Canadian Sailcraft. I forget if it's a Rocna, Manson Supreme, or a Mantus. Whichever it is (all three are very similar) he loves it and wouldn't use another.

Personally, I've read more stories about CQRs not setting and dragging, such that I'd never get one, given the reputation of one of these "new generation" anchors…

A little off topic but how do you know to replace your chain? Is it covered with rust? Links coming apart or what? I sort of think of chain being forever. How do you make the evaluation?

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I am watching this with interest. I want to replace my chain on my boat. I have 25' of some very tiny stuff that I don't like. I want to go to 30' of 1/4" chain. I have seen it on ebay for a reasonable rate.

You've had it long enough to see your kids off to college..swapped ends a few times, had it re-galvanized once, there are visibly deformed links, are preparing for changing anchor conditions / new cruising grounds.

Thanks. I've already decided on a Rocna. I was curious what Greg used.

Trying to decide between Rocna 10 and Rocna 15

Thanks Gunni. I only have 60ft of 5/16th SS and it shows no wear.
