My ship 37' - 20,000lb.What size chain for the anchor rode?What type of chain - hot dipped looks the best and gets the most hits on cruisers.What do you have - why do you have it?Me? On Lake Erie I have 8' of chain, the rest (200') is 5/8' three strand.What do you use on the ocean?

We have 50 feet of 5/16th inch galvanized...

high test with 250 feet of 5/8th inch three strand nylon connected to a 40 pound Danforth anchor. Works great for the PNW waters where we sail. Mostly mud and sand bottoms. I always drop a 20 pound kellet once I set the anchor. Our Maxwell windlass does a good job bringing it all up. I've done it by hand before, but prefer the windlass.Terry

On our boat..

We run 50 feet of 5/16 chain to 300 feet of 3/4 inch double braid anchor rode. I've had all chain but prefer, for our sailing waters, chain to rope...You really should have at least 1 boat length of at least 5/16 chain for your boat. Eight feet is way to minimalist even on the lakes.....With only 208 feet of rode the max depth you can anchor in, and achieve a 7:1 ratio in any sort of wind, is about 26 feet. This ratio is figured as the max water depth plus height of bow off of the water multiplied by 7. Or 26 feet of water + 4 feet of bow height X 7 = 210 feet of rode needed. Or I have 208 feet of rode divided by 7 = 29.71 minus 4 feet of bow height for total max depth of about 26 feet.. I guessed about 4 feet of bow height for illustration purposes. As long as you stay out of anchorages with more than 26 feet of water your fine...Most often you would set anchor at a 7:1 and reduce to 5:1 once it's set or even a 4:1 if absolutely necessary or you have enough chain to pull it off. If however the wind picks up you'll need that 7:1 ratio for insurance and peace of mind.....

use 30 feet of 3/8 chain, 35 pound plow and 300 feet 5/8 three strand nylon. It works.

The Annapolis Book of Seamanship recommends for your boat the minimum of 18' of 5/16" chain on 1/2" nylon rode. The length of rode should be 7 x the depth + wl to anchor chock of your typical anchoring depth.

I find the best way to spell check is to install the Google toolbar on your browser. There is a built-in spell checker that works great for me.

Download and use Mozilla Firefox as your browser. It's much more secure and offers a built in "on the fly" spell checker! As you type it just underlines words in red that are spelled incorrectly!! All you do is correct the word and keep on typing. There is no reason anyone should still be using IE IMHO... I've not had an issue with spy ware or viruses since switching to Mozilla three years ago and best of all it's FREE..By the way I also dumped Outlook as my email program and switched to Mozilla Thunderbird an I LOVE IT too!Mozilla Firefoxhttp://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
