The 1968 Cal 34 previously listed for $6500 on e-bay is now less than $3500. It is in my home port of Carabelle so I looked at it. It may have some promise but it does need some work. Supposedly the old Atomic 4 doesnt work. It has some cosmetic damage to the hull (yes, really just cosmetic, I looked). It has an older Martec folding prop. Interior looks OK. Probably a very good buy for less than $4000. Standing rigging looks sort of puny. Since it will prob have to sit for a couple months till it can be put into decent shape to launch, fortunately the boat yard there is very reasonably priced. I reccomend a look at it. If my S2 wasnt now in very good shape, I would consider it. David dbohara@mindspring.com

Cal 34 on EBAY

David, my wife and I have been looking for a first time project boat so I was pleased to see your note on this boat and have gone to ebay and checked it out. Do you have any idea what the monthly fee (on the hard) would be there in Carrbella per month for this boat? Thanks, Bill

Old Cheap Cal

I bought my project Cal 34 for $11,000 USD for the hull back in 1995. I found the hull in Lake Okochobee in the center of South Florida. It was a good news/Bad news boat. Good News: it was kept in fresh water. Bad News: nobody takes care of anything in fresh water. It had an eco system in the cockpit and had been violated by so much rain water that she was sitting in the mud. It took me nearly five months of weekends to get her seaworthy enough to bring her out of the lake to the Gulf. I put her in a yard and did the rigging. Atomic fours are real stupid engines and very easy to wrench. There seem to be parts and blocks all over the place. I hope you got this boat, I have had such a kick with my Cal 34. It is't a show boat, it is set up for trolling on long trips, it is a real good place to cook fresh fish and with the addition of a six purchase B&T it is a pretty good dive platform too. Real nice in thick winds, loves 20kts and handles well in light air too. The only thing I don't like about its nature is how she responds under power, shs is tough to steer, I use the engine very little and only at idle so that isn't much of an issue. PeAcE!

Looking at the same type boat

Hi I'm paul and today I saw a 67 ir 68 Cal 34 that I am considering purchasing. The owner wants 10,000. for the boat that is in "good" condition. I have a 68 O'day Outlaw that I want to sell or trade to move up. the Cal seems like so much more boat. Lots of room below, nice cockpit. I'm seriously considering this boat. The hull is in good condition. the boat seems dry. The engine is a 1987 Universal Desiel 30Hp with low hours.. ¬Let me know what you have decided, but it sounds like a fair price to me. Paul
